The Imperial Theatre exceeded its fundraising goal to receive the match for tax dollars that will help restore the historic downtown theater.

Executive Director Charles Scavullo said $256,000 was collected to receive the $1 million special purpose local option sales tax money. The goal was a 25 percent match, or $250,000.

“We had wonderful corporate and foundation support,” Scavullo said. “Literally hundreds if not thousands of individuals from the CSRA contributed.”

The campaign began more than a year ago. The tax money will be used to update heating and air systems, repair the exterior building enclosure, and replace the original fire curtain and fire escapes.

The Imperial Theatre will begin the second phase of its capital campaign in coming months. In the next three years, $1 million needs to be raised toward the ultimate goal of $4 million to $6 million, Scavullo said.

Well taxpayers you have just become the defacto owners

of a CBD theater. Go down and inspect what your dollars have purchased. Surely they will allow "the owners" to visit without charge. The owners of other entertainment venues have reserved box seats or booths. ARC entertainment will of course operate by the same norms as other cultured venues. LOL LOL LOL The few, the proud, the privileged are alive and well in ARC. They will party with your hard earned money til the cows come home.

Go Charlie!

Charlie Scavullo has come a long way from Legion Utensil and "My Italian Face" restaurant. It's great that he and his staff raised so much money. Augusta NEEDS the Imperial.

It is kind of strange that in today's edition of the Metro Spirit we have an article saying that $150,000 is missing from the Imperial Theatre's accounts; and here in the Chronicle we have the story that the Imperial Theatre has raised $250,000 to qualify for taxpayer matching funds. Could it be that the higher-ups at the Theatre actually raised only $100,000 and just made up the $150,000 that is now conveniently missing?
