Gweneth Francis-Elzie holds her newborn son, Eric John Antonio Elzie, at Doctors Hospital. Born at 1:41 a.m. Jan. 1, Eric was the first baby born in 2013 in the area.

Just hours after being born, Eric looked up at his mother and father, Gweneth Francis-Elzie and Shawn Elzie, both 34, with eyes wide open. An occasional yawn or change in facial expression drew big smiles and exclamations from the first-time parents.

“We think he’s perfect, but we may be a little biased,” Francis-Elzie said.

Already the couple could point out features that resembled them.

“Everybody has been saying he has my cheeks and looks like my husband,” Francis-Elzie said.

Doctors and nurses at Doctors Hospital hinted to the couple mid-labor that little Eric might be the first baby of the new year, but the couple had bigger things on their minds. All they wanted was for the baby to be born safe and healthy.

Francis-Elzie was brought into the hospital early after her blood pressure began to rise and she began to dilate without contractions. Eric was delivered by cesarean section.

“It’s been great, but (Monday) just seems like a big fog,” she said.

Francis-Elzie said her son’s timely arrival just makes the birth that much more special and will make a nice story to tell him later.

“I just knew there would be another baby before us,” she said.
