Third pedestrian hit in week remains critical

An Augusta woman struck by a car while trying to walk across Peach Orchard Road on Saturday night remains in critical condition at Medical College of Georgia Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Susan D. Bailey, 41, of Blue­berry Drive, “darted into traffic” near Lumpkin Road around 7:30 p.m. Saturday, according to a Richmond County sheriff’s report.

Bailey was walking outside the crosswalk when she was hit by a 1996 Honda Accord driven by Rodriquez Graham of Augusta, who had a green light to cross Lumpkin on Peach Orchard, according to the report.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Dan­ny Whitehead said no charges will be filed against Graham. He said Bailey was leaving the Fishbowl Lounge on Lump­kin when she was hit.

The incident was the third involving a pedestrian in less than a week. On Dec. 17, a 5-year-old boy was struck and killed while trying to cross Peach Orchard Road. On Tuesday, a 47-year-old North Carolina man died after being hit by a car on Washington Road.
