Empty Stocking Fund helps more than 1,000 needy families

Again this holiday season our community and its institutions have opened their checkbooks and their pocketbooks and used the Internet to contribute to The Augusta Chronicle’s Empty Stocking Fund.

Following a tradition begun 82 years ago, your generosity has brought joy to more than 1,000 needy families this Christmas with donations of more than $85,000 through Christmas Eve. As always, most of the beneficiaries were children whose parents have been struggling through the challenges of the current economy.

That generosity can certainly continue. The deadline to submit an application for help has passed, but contributions will be accepted into January.

Donations are tax-deductible. To contribute:

• Mail donations to The Augusta Chronicle’s Empty Stocking Fund, P.O. Box 1928, Augusta, GA 30903-1928.

• Drop off your donations at the cashier’s office at The Chronicle News Building, 725 Broad St., weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.; and at the Columbia County Bureau, 4272 Washington Road, Suite 3B, weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

• Donate online at augustachronicle.com/emptystocking.
