Richmond County sheriff’s deputies were called to help with crowd control at Augusta Mall on Friday morning as hundreds gathered to buy the new Air Jordan shoes.

Police estimated that 500 people were crowding the mall entrances at 7 a.m. in hopes of buying a pair of the sneakers, which sell for about $180 and are a re-release of a 1996 design said to be one of the most famous in the Air Jordan line.

At one point, crowds were ordered out of the mall after a disturbance in line, according to police scanner traffic.

Eric Harris said he bought a pair of the sneakers after waiting in line since 4 a.m. He said there was a lot of shoving and that deputies threatened the crowd with pepper spray before they were ordered outside.

Harris and his friends, who always buy Jordan shoes on their release dates, said lines are usually long but that this was one of the worst they could recall.

“It’s Christmastime,” Harris said. “Everybody wants their kids to have them.”

In Huntsville, Ala., police used pepper spray to calm unruly crowds lining up for the shoes outside a mall Thursday morning. News reports said the crowds gathered were seeking bands to ensure they could buy the shoes later. WAFF-TV reported that many refused to leave for medical treatment after being pepper sprayed.

Need a Law?

There used to be laws against selling firewater to the Indians. It was taking advantage of them and made them act crazy.

These folks actually tried to form some sort of a queue and they payed for the merchandise. The store was not trashed and there was no rioting by those who came away empty handed.

OK, there was some pushing and shoving but it could have been MUCH worse!

Crisis of values

We have a moral crisis in this country. When people will stand in line and spend an absurd amount of money for shoes, iPhones or anything else we have a crisis of values. One parent says "every parent wants their kids to have them." No. Everybody doesn't want that. We want our kids to learn respect, decency and morals. I could not care less what kind of shoes they own.

Wonder how many of the folks

Wonder how many of the folks in line are on food stamps, unemployment or some other form of public assistance? Would be an interesting survey...

Watch out

Unfortunately, someone will most likely get mugged for these ridiculous shoes. I’ve seen it too many times before.

Nice to see my TD buddy

Nice to see my TD buddy disagrees with me. Must be one of those who thinks spending $180 on a pair of shoes that the kid will probably outgrow in 6 months or get mugged/robbed or shot for them, is a smart idea.

I guarantee that everyone

I guarantee that everyone standing in that line to spend $180 on a pair of ugly tennis shoes thinks that they are part of the "poor" who the "rich" are taking advantage of.

I guess that is an easier to swallow excuse than admitting the truth.

Nike stock is $103 a share today and SMART people would have taken that $180 and bought their kid 1.5 shares. Less than smart people are standing in line to throw away their money on something that will probably get their kid mugged. Never heard of a kid being mugged for a share of stock.

You know why some are rich and some are poor. Because some make smart decisions and others make dumb decisions.

“It’s Christmastime,” Harris said.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE … IT’S GOTTA BE THE SHOES!!!

When will people ever under stand the “Reason for the Season”? Let me make this one point, no where in the story of Christmas, Away in a Manger, or the birth of Christ … Hark the Herald Angel Sing, Glory to the New Born King is there a reference to Air Jordan XI Concord tennis shoes .

Nike

For a lot of those people that is a job. There are websites dedicated to the release date of new styles. They buy them for $200 and resell them for 3 to 5 times what they pay for them, sometimes more. Nike releases a limited quanitity and then the market place takes over. Look on resale sites for Nike shoes, you would be amazed.

These are the same people who swear Columbia dnd Aiken are so much more progressive lol.. Yeah, it's easy to seem 'progressive' when the leaders are nothing but white conservative males.
