About 1,100 people will have the opportunity to see some of Savannah River Site’s major nuclear facilities during a new series of tours that begin in January.

“It’s been so successful in the past few years we’ve decided to continue it again in 2013,” said Savannah River Nuclear Solutions spokesman D.T. Townsend.

The 22 driving tours are free and accommodate 50 people each. Advance registration, which opened Monday, is required.

The 310-square-mile site once produced plutonium and tritium for nuclear bombs, and access to most areas is restricted. Work there is now focused mostly on research and environmental cleanup programs.

Tours provide an opportunity for those interested in SRS to better understand the Department of Energy’s facilities and workers who changed the face of Aiken, Barnwell and Allendale counties and helped win the Cold War.

The tours will include a drive-by glimpse at facilities such as the Defense Waste Processing Facility, closed nuclear reactors and H Canyon, and will include a visit to the Savannah River Ecology Lab.

Check-in for all tours begins at 12:30 p.m., at the Aiken County Center for Hydrogen Research off U.S. Highway 278. Guests will be given an overview and safety briefing.

To register, visit the SRS Web site tour page at www.srs.gov/general/tour/public.htm or call (803) 952-8994.
