The ceremony will be at the John Ruffin Courthouse at 10 a.m. A free reception luncheon will follow at Beulah Grove Baptist Church from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Both events will be open to the public, but seating is limited.

On Jan. 4, Roundtree, Richmond County’s first black sheriff, will celebrate his election with an Inaugural Charity Gala that will raise money for several local charities. The black-tie event will include dining, dancing, silent and live auctions, and a reaffirmation of the oath of office.

In a news release, Roundtree said the gala is an “attempt to bring unity to our community as well as raise money for noteworthy charities.”

Tickets for the January gala can be purchased at Roundtreeforsheriff.com or by calling (706) 495-6874.

Who's paying for all of the food, drinks, security? I'm sure Blanchards got that arranged too. It better not be coming out of county tax funds. What a pompous --- Roundtree is.

Bottom Line

Let's read the press release carefully:

On Jan. 4, Roundtree, Richmond County’s first black sheriff, will celebrate the historic election with an Inaugural Charity Gala that will . . . includ(e) dining, dancing, silent and live auctions and a reaffirmation of the oath of office.

The only thing historic about this election is the fact that this is the first sheriff election in Georgia (maybe the first east of the Mississippi River) in which there ever was such a perverse thing as a black tie Inaugural Charity Gala that will include dining, dancing, silent and live auctions.

Swearing in of Current Officers

The order of the swearing in of current officers will be interesting, too. Who goes first? Is anyone not sworn in? Know what I mean?

Most of the voters who

Most of the voters who elected him cannot afford to attend his Gala. Throw them a few crumbs with the free lunch. That out to be a pretty interesting event. They will be lined up "turkey-giveaway" style.

Truth Is

Truth is there is a shady nightclub element wielding power around Augusta with the RCSO. (I realize this is not a revelation and some in the media have pointed out the same problem.) My whole purpose in the Sheriff's election has been to point out and fight this corruption. Tree can break this link, but he is not off to a good start. Sheriff Roundtree, please be careful.

Open Curtain, my friend, not picking on you, but I hope you and others can see where I was coming from before the Sheriff's election. See the realities? But it's not too late. With the right emphasis, Sheriff Roundtree can turn out to be a fantasic Sheriff. The right influences begin right here in the comments because the Chronicle can't openly say such things...well, maybe Sylvia. Heh. Come'on Man, do this right.

Actually the quote was....

"He's doing quite well, pretty impressive. That little boy is driving well and he's putting well. He's doing everything it takes to win. So, you know what you guys do when he gets in here? You pat him on the back and say congratulations and enjoy it and tell him not to serve fried chicken next year. Got it." Zoeller then smiled, snapped his fingers, and walked away before turning and adding, "or collard greens or whatever the hell they serve"

Riverman1 - I feel honored

when I come in your target sights. You have a rep of honest and factual shooting.

If I ever need burning a little please be the 1st to light the fire.

Regarding the Night Club Mafia - You might remember I brought up a few $$$.00 campaign donations made from a club over here on the South Side. Or the Have a Round on RoundTree Night we all heard about, or the fact a lawyer that specializes in DUI cases being a big donor also.

He never was my choice for sheriff. But I did say I would judge him on his actions moving forward not his past mistakes.

I am sure I won't have to wait long to have something comment on after 12-20-12.

@Giants

Glad you mentioned Victor Hill. His election is even more unthinkable than Tree's. You are right, they would probably work well together. Do you think Roundtree has favors to repay? Saw a video clip where a female Detroit councilperson was calling for Obama to send them some money since "they" elected him. LOL!

Sweet Son

Look, I don't know how this whole Roundtree deal is going to play out. He could turn out to be Wyatt Earp, Matt Dillion and jugde Roy Bean all rolled up into one. However, I think the probability of that happening are very low. Whatever happens, the people in Augusta can always say, "at least we don't live in Clayton County".

I guess...

I guess people really don't learn from other people's mistakes. Good grief. Lotsa luck. I hope I'm proven wrong, but if I were Roundtree I wouldn't set foot near an event like this. It just doesn't look right. Remember C. Walker and his "fund-raising" at that football extravaganza every year?

well all the rats, roaches, and vermin will be able to rest easy for the next 4 years...a "kindler and gentler" sheriff will be in office to stroke their hand and understand their pain instead of a .38 hollow point center mass...it wouldn't suprise me if roundtree will institute a new dress code for all law enforcement personel (especially the males) to wear their pants below their butts and the females must show some thong. the steel reserve and other malt liquor is flowing in cherry tree xing, cooney circle, sand bar manor, and on london blvd. because a "homie" is in office and they will be allowed to run wild shooting, robbing, raping, and selling "product" on every corner and school playground....
