Aiken Technical College’s planned Center for Energy & Advanced Manufacturing got a $150,000 boost Tuesday with a $50,000 donation and $100,000 more in followup pledges from Savannah River Site’s management contractor.

The funding from Savannah River Nuclear Solutions will bring the college closer to the $2 million it needs to win a matching U.S. Economic Development Administration grant to help build the new center, which initially will offer classes in radiation protection technology, nuclear quality systems, welding and mechatronics.

More than $1 million has been raised so far, said college president Susan Winsor.

“This new, state-of-the-art facility will allow the College’s programs to grow and continue to meet the needs of this region’s workforce,” she said.
