As the leader of one of Georgia’s nonprofit riverkeeper groups, Wedincamp’s organization was most recently known for its actions after a major 2011 fish kill at the King America Finishing textile plant in Screven County, and the resulting dispute with state regulators over its enforcement actions.
Her plans include teaming up with her husband, Jim Wedincamp, to establish an environmental consulting business.
Until a new riverkeeper is chosen, the group’s executive director, Emily Markesteyn, will serve as interim riverkeeper.
The Ogeechee Riverkeeper is one of seven such organizations in Georgia, including Savannah Riverkeeper, founded in Augusta in 2001.
The Georgia groups are part of a national network of nearly 200 affiliated organizations tied by membership to the Waterkeeper Alliance, founded in 1999 by environmental activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
