The annual James Brown Turkey Giveaway is 9 a.m. Monday at Dyess Park, 902 James Brown Blvd. Members of the Brown family will help hand out turkeys.
Nearly the same number of turkeys will be given out as last year when 500 families were fed, said Brown’s daughter Deanna Brown-Thomas. One turkey is given per house.
The “Godfather of Soul” started the giveaway more than 20 years ago and the Brown Family Children Foundation has continued it since 2007.
Many families preregistered for the giveaway, but some applications will be taken Monday morning. Recipients must provide a valid state ID and proof of address, such as a utility bill or lease statement, Brown-Thomas said.
Registration ensures that elderly or disabled individuals aren’t standing in line longer than necessary, and it guarantees a turkey, she said.
Brown-Thomas said the annual event is hard work, but work she does to continue the legacy of her father. Sponsors, volunteers and Elif Crawford, her father’s former personal assistant, make it possible, she said.
“Without the grace of God giving us the opportunity to help people, I could not do it,” Brown-Thomas said. “It takes willing hearts.”
