Rants & Raves

Comments from readers:

RANT TO THE unmarked, silver Richmond County police car that passed me on Doug Barnard Parkway by the airport. I was in the log truck. I was running 45, the speed limit, and you came by me with no lights on running at least 75-80 mph. If you have an emergency, Officer, you need to turn on your blue lights; otherwise you are breaking the law. Maybe Sheriff Roundtree can rein in you cowboys.

I OBJECT TO full-page liquor ads in this conservative newspaper in addition to the one in North Augusta. The closer we get to the holidays, the more you people advertise this. Why don’t you publish the number of DUIs issued?

HE’S BACK. OH yeah. Go, Marion Williams. Stick it to the man. Throw a monkey wrench in all their goofy plans.

I HOPE THE “Save Fort Gordon” group is still active. Major cuts in the military budget and the size of the Army are coming now that President Obama has been re-elected. Fort Gordon is surely on the hit list. You’d better buckle up; this ride could be bumpy.

BIG RAVE TO all who stood in long lines for hours and hours to vote. Thank you. This is America; home of the brave, land of the free. We should not be the land of voter suppression.

WE NEED TO be real supportive of President Obama; he has inherited 8 percent unemployment, trillion-dollar deficits, high gas prices and about 12 million Americans underemployed or unemployed and a horrible foreign policy situation.

RANT TO ALL NAYSAYERS in regard to the new elected officials. It’s done. It’s time for positive participation to help our city, county and nation. It’s not time for negative, hateful and divisive comments that will not help in solving issues.

ALL THESE YEARS you all told me that dad-gum Haunted Pillar was haunted and not to touch it. Then right there on the front page are two guys hugging the thing. What about the Tooth Fairy and Easter Bunny?

I HAVE YET TO SEE the first FEMA trailer in the yard of anyone that lost their home and is still living in the ruins. Are there no repair shops, construction companies or tool rentals that have portable welding machines to serve as generators for the gas stations without power? What New York and New Jersey need now are some rednecks with their get r’ done abilities.

Speaking of Pillars/Post/Markers or whatever it is!

How about the one at Walton Way and Milledge Rd. Isn't that the "center" of Summerville?

Can These Be A Connection

to our nations 16 Trillion debt?

#1 The U.S. government is spending $750,000 on a new soccer field for detainees held at Guantanamo Bay.

#2 The Obama administration plans to spend between 16 and 20 million dollars helping students from Indonesia get master’s degrees.

#3 If you can believe it, the U.S. government has spent $175,587 “to determine if cocaine makes Japanese quail engage in sexually risky behavior”.

#4 The U.S. government spent $200,000 on “a tattoo removal program” in Mission Hills, California.

#5 The federal government has shelled out $3 million to researchers at the University of California at Irvine to fund their research on video games such as World of Warcraft. Wouldn’t we all love to have a “research job” like that?

#6 The Department of Health and Human Services plans to spend $500 million on a program that will, among other things, seek to solve the problem of 5-year-old children that “can’t sit still” in a kindergarten classroom.

#7 Fannie Mae is about to ask the federal government for another $4.6 billion bailout, and it will almost certainly get it.

#8 The federal government once spent 30 million dollars on a program that was designed to help Pakistani farmers produce more mangoes.

#9 The U.S. Department of Agriculture once gave researchers at the University of New Hampshire $700,000 to study methane gas emissions from dairy cows.

#10 According to USA Today, 13 different government agencies “fund 209 different science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education programs — and 173 of those programs overlap with at least one other program.”

#11 A total of $615,000 was given to the University of California at Santa Cruz to digitize photos, T-shirts and concert tickets belonging to the Grateful Dead.

#12 China lends us more money than any other foreign nation, but that didn't stop our government from spending 17.8 million dollars on social and environmental programs for China.

#13 The U.S. government once spent 2.6 million dollars to train Chinese prostitutes to drink responsibly.

#14 One professor at Stanford University was given $239,100 to study how Americans use the Internet to find love.

#15 The U.S. Postal Service spent $13,500 on a single dinner at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse.

#16 The National Science Foundation once spent $216,000 to study whether or not politicians “gain or lose support by taking ambiguous positions”.

#17 A total of $1.8 million was spent on a “museum of neon signs” in Las Vegas, Nevada.

#18 The federal government spends 25 billion dollars a year maintaining federal buildings that are either unused or totally vacant.

#19 U.S. farmers are given a total of $2 billion each year for not farming their land.

#20 The U.S. government handed one Tennessee library $5,000 for the purpose of hosting a series of video game parties.

#21 A few years ago the government spent $123,050 on a Mother’s Day Shrine in Grafton, West Virginia. It turns out that Grafton only has a population of a little more than 5,000 people.

#22 One professor at Dartmouth University was given $137,530 to create a “recession-themed” video game entitled “Layoff”.

#23 According to the Heritage Foundation, the U.S. military spent “$998,798 shipping two 19-cent washers from South Carolina to Texas and $293,451 sending an 89-cent washer from South Carolina to Florida”.

#24 The U.S. Department of Agriculture once shelled out $30,000 to a group of farmers to develop a tourist-friendly database of farms that host guests for overnight “haycations”.

#25 The National Institutes of Health paid researchers $400,000 to find out why gay men in Argentina engage in risky sexual behavior when they are drunk.

#26 The National Institutes of Health also once spent $442,340 to study the behavior of male prostitutes in Vietnam.

#27 The National Institutes of Health loves to spend our tax money on really bizarre things. The NIH once spent $800,000 in “stimulus funds” to study the impact of a “genital-washing program” on men in South Africa.

#28 According to the Washington Post, 1,271 different government organizations work on government programs related to counter terrorism and homeland security.

#29 The U.S. government spent $100,000 on a “Celebrity Chef Fruit Promotion Road Show in Indonesia”.

#30 The feds once gave Alaska Airlines $500,000 “to paint a Chinook salmon” on the side of a Boeing 737.

At Lease I now feel better to know my tax dollar is being spent wisely.

Countyman

Countyman, well, to go over the issues again, if you add up all the costs of the TEE, parking deck and Laney Walker payoff, then consider the kitchen equipment, enhanced ventilation system that was added, furniture, management fees, maintenance fees and utility bills...all that I'm pretty sure adds up to over $100 million. If not, it's sure close.

Another issue was whether South Augusta or West Augusta adds more to the county tax revenue. I say it's South Augusta due to the larger area, more people and mega industry. If you show me something else, I'll have an open mind.

Then there was the statement that part of Richmond Cty is in Martinez. Martinez is an unincorporated area that the Chronicle has written about before because of its nebulous nature. Most consider it beginning on Wash. Rd at I-20 going towards Evans.

As far as who you work for, I assumed you work for an agency that receives funding from the county, although you don't have an actual county job. I could be wrong on that too. Only you know. Whatever you say is fine with me.

And quit saying "America", you racist golf-playing p...k! This is the United States OF America, and no more "America" than Uruguay or Nova Scotia! The United States OF America is but one tiny segment of the Americas. When you say "America", you must specify - North, South, Central or Latin?! Your provincial mindset and imperialistic arrogance are embarrassing, and exemplary of the dumbing-down of this nation (which has no right to exist, by the way). And it's the ultra-conservative clowns like yourself who are the primary dumb-down-ers.

Four more years of Obama - yea!!! What a glorious reality!!! But hopefully NO more years of YOU, you conservative creep. It doesn't get any creepier than you. You do NOT belong on the radio.

Yep.....the sky is still there and I think the sun came out today although there is gloom in the air. The stock market dropped another 30 points today but that's a good day since Obama's re-election.

"Unemployment is down in

"Unemployment is down in Georgia and that's before the Christmas seasonal hiring" (Retired Army)

Wrong RA, seasonal hiring started back in late September, early October so this could account for unemployment decreasing a little but like someone else mentioned.....wait until after the Christmas holidays and you will see it go back up.

Stupid Is, As Stupid Does

Someone please tell me what kind of person with a working brain, would "thumbs-down" Cobalt George's list of idiotic, moronic, downright stupid programs or whatever you want to call them, that our ignorant government(Congress)gives taxpayer money to? As long as that list is, don't you know there is a list that no one would believe, even if they saw it.........................? George(along with some others), will never, never, never, get a "thumbs down" from me.

Too much importance is put on thumps up/down....what if we all stop with them...& ignore the stupid things....they have been a headache from day 1....they don't make or break a good post...they mean NOTHING ....
AC has never fully explained their usefulness....I frankly don't see ANY.

Something is bothering me

McCain & Graham have been dedicated Senators for a long time....McCain has suffered hardships that we can only imagine.....to have the President try to shame 2 qualified men just doesn't sit right with me....they have every right in the book to queston S Rice & what she said after the Libya mess....
Now I see the black congressman from SC wants to jump on the shame wagon on Graham...even bringing up the fact she is black....when will it STOP----who cares what color she is....they have a RIGHT to get to the bottom of it ....

Very Interesting....

So...it is possible to increase your own points by giving yourself uppers and/or downers. That explains a lot.

As for the AC taking away points....believe me, I know all about that process.
