One person is dead after being hit by an SUV on Washington Road early Sunday, authorities said.

Heather Floyd, 34, was walking across the 2800 block of Washington Road from Circle K to Rodeway Inn just before 2 a.m. when she was hit by a 2006 Jeep SUV driven by Nicole Mason of Martinez, according to Richmond County sheriff’s Capt. Scott Gay.

Floyd was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital, where she died from her injuries. Her husband, Jene, had been walking behind her.

Gay said the wreck was under investigation but it appeared Floyd was at fault for not crossing at a crosswalk.

That .5 mile stretch of Washington Rd. @ I-20 has to be the deadliest in the country for pedestrians. Can anything be done to prevent future tragedy?
