An early observance of Veterans Day this weekend seeks not only to honor veterans but support a new generation of service members.

Aiken’s Marine Corps League Detachment No. 939 will hold a Veterans Appreciation Celebration from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Aiken’s Houndslake Country Club. The event’s guest speaker is retired Marine Col. Harvey Barnum, who received the Medal of Honor for his actions under fire in Vietnam in 1965.

Proceeds from the $50 door fee will fund scholarships for JRTOC students in Aiken County high schools. The scholarship is in honor of Marine Cpl. Matthew Dillon, who was killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq in 2006.

“We want to pay tribute to our veterans, but not only do that but raise money for our young people,” said Dillon’s father, Neal.

A $50 tax-deductible donation per attendee will be collected for the scholarship. Tickets can be purchased at Floyd and Green Jewelers, 515 Silver Bluff Road, Aiken, or at Houndslake Country Club.
