Rants & Raves

Comments from readers:

RANT TO THE DRIVER who ran out of gas in the westbound lane of Bobby Jones near mile marker 12 and did not pull off the road, but merely turned on the flashers in the passing lane during rush-hour traffic between 5 and 6 on Wednesday. You didn’t think to pull off the road while you were still coasting, did you?

RANT AGAINST THE whole Augusta area. Gregg Allman played here, and I doubt there were 2,000 people there. They should quit jumping on the people who run the coliseum and blame the people of Augusta. I was embarrassed for Gregg Allman. If you want good acts in town, you have to support them.

A RAVE FOR ALL THE physicians who generously donate their time and services to Project Access.

I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT in south Augusta the U.S. Postal Service cannot deliver the mail around the same time.

I HAD THE MISFORTUNE of being put in the Richmond County jail at 401 Walton Way. The dog pound is cleaner than the jail’s holding cells. Richmond County should be completely ashamed for putting people in filthy situations like this. The people in the jail are real nice and try to get you out of there as quickly as possible, but the place is filthy.

WATCH THE MONEY in the coming years: $50 million in construction was approved for Athens’ medical school, while only $20 million was approved for Augusta’s. The Board of Regents will give the majority of the money to Athens for about 10 years and then announce the medical college is moving. Be forewarned. We don’t want to get stuck with only the smaller schools. We have no political clout in Atlanta. Pay attention.

A RANTER SAID only those paying taxes should be able to vote; all others are parasites. What taxes would qualify? Property? Income? Sales? Gasoline? Poll?

PLEASE BRING BACK Cul de Sac to the comics page. Stone Soup is stupid. So is Lio.

Unfortunately, the man who created

Unfortunately, the man who created Cul de Sac made the decision to retire in September after battling Parkinson's Disease since 2009. He passed the inking work along to another artist, but continued to struggle to meet deadlines and had to make the difficult decision to call it a career. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/comic-riffs/post/richard-thompson-en...

I would say the answer is federal income tax. Along with your picture I.D. you would have to show the poll worker the most recent 1040 return showing you actually had a tax liability.

Of course, if it is a joint return, both husband and wife could vote on the same return.

However, dependents do not get a vote, no matter what their age.

Augusta>Athens

Where is the person getting the $20 million from? The article said the $50 million was related to several construction projects in Athens. $7 million of the $50 million is coming straight from UGA, and not the BOR.

That's no comparison versus the $112 million dental(largest single investment in GA history), $100 million Cancer Center, $76 million Medical Commons, $1 million Laney Walker pedestrian park, $5 million towards the current Cancer Center, GGHF site(performing arts center/bio tech center/ dorms) and ASU east/west campuses(dorms, student center, other buildings).

1 new restaurant in South Augusta & 5 restaurants in the CBD

I have a few updates to share with the local public.

The new Five Guys opening at Colony Plaza in South Augusta was approved today.
http://appweb.augustaga.gov/planning_zoning/plazid_display.asp?zID=4384

Two new businesses are coming downtown very soon.... Eros Bistro(Italian restaurant: 1002 Broad) & Downtown Saloon(Bar: 1128 Broad).

This is definitely the largest amount of restaurants underway at one time downtown in recent memory.. Boars Head Public House at 1135 Broad street in the CBD, Sprint Food & Metro Market at 851 Broad next to the common(open air seating, 1st floor urban market: restaurant/convenience store, and 2nd floor Sprint Food corporate offices and space for other tenants), Farmhaus Burger at 1204 Broad St, & Whiskey Bar Kitchen at 1048 Broad.. The 4,300 sq. ft. of commercial space at 901 Broad could become another one....

Gregg Allman

I think 2,000 people for the Augusta area is not a bad crowd. Some folks I know that like Gregg Allman would not want to venture from their recliners or couches to go to downtown Augusta.
I am pretty sure that there were not 2,000 people at the Oct 4th Westobou outdoor concert. But it was a really nice turnout.
The Allman Brothers were from my generation and from Macon, like the Big "O", Otis Redding. I think seeing Gregg Allman would have been pretty cool. Maybe he could tell us what it was like being married to Cher. That could have been his inspiration to record "Stormy Monday".

Has beens

These bands coming here are old left overs, they wouldn't think about coming here when they were big.
I was at a free cell phone tent today. They require a picture ID. I thought that was racist. But I have been wrong several times.
I don't care when they post office comes. They could cut it down to once a week or two. The water bill is the only thing that hasn't gone green and paperless. I know you can pay online but it cost almost $5 extra and they don't send you the bill via e-mail.

Rant #4

It probably has to do how many packages your mail carrier has to get out and deliver to the house, how many little pink slips he/she has to write and stick in mail boxes because people are not home to accept packages.

I imagine there are other factors that can happen in a mail carriers life that can influence the daily mail that they have absolutely no control over.

Gee..the things that tick people off :0)

Gregg Allman

I am one of those that didn't want to get out of my chair to go see him. He is not all that to me, wasn't back then either.

We went to see Lynyrd Skynyrd when they were here and had a wonderful time.

It's easy

to avoid the "filthy situation" in the RC jail. Don't do anything stupid that would warrant a free nights lodging. And I'll bet you didn't even thank the LEO's for the job they do every day.

A Jail Should Be...

...a filthy and miserable place to be. It should be cold, dank, and disgusting. People who go to jail should loathe the experience. It should be so horrible and disgusting that they do everything within their power to NEVER return. The prison scenes from the movie "Cool Hand Luke" should be the goal for prison wardens.

Blowing my mind today..

These articles ......saying this...
He said that he didn’t want to see the Democratic Party become “an all-black party” but that divisiveness in politics is making it so.

Say what.....who is being divisive MrLowery.....

I know these words are meant for a targeted audience BUT we see them too......last night on the news I saw a sad story about Chicago.....children shot while sitting on their porch....gangs & thugs running the neighborhoods.....older folks scared to venture outside.......hundreds of innocents killed .....
Mr Lowery..WHY NOT RUN THESE THUGS OUT OF TOWN....why can't you see what has happened THERE....take your voice & reputation to Chicago & try to help these kids stay ALIVE....
What will Obama do about it Mr Lowery???

Sarge Update.

As you maybe know he has been taking a new pill. It has given him some real bad side effects to a point that it takes all his will power to move. He gives all his love and prayers to all of you,

He has been taken off that new pill and will see the doctor next week.

A recent article about Chicago gangs..

(CBS News) There are 228 dead: That's the number of murders this year in Chicago. It's nearly twice as many as the number of Americans lost on the battlefields of Afghanistan over these last six months. And the number of deaths is up 35 percent over the same period last year.

There was a time it was called "gangland" Chicago and maybe that time has returned.

Chicago teen on living amid violence: "I don't expect to have a future here"

The cops tell us it's the gang members who have turned some neighborhoods into free-fire zones. More people were cut down today.

Across Chicago, nine people were killed between Friday and Sunday, and two more were gunned down just hours ago - a murder rate of two a day.

"It's tragic," Pastor Robin Hood told CBS News. "This is like Beirut was in the 70s. It's war."

Hood lives in Chicago's North Lawndale neighborhood, where three of the victims were killed.

"People are scared to come outdoors," Hood explains. "They're scared for their kids to sit on the porches and play in the playground. It's total fear."

OK BLACK LEADERS...WHERE ARE YOU....

Outside of the fact that

Outside of the fact that jails should not be a comfortable place to stay, there is a big reason why I have no problem with the lack of cleanliness there and that is because I've never been inside the jail. Try to follow the law and see how that works out.

Bumper Sticker

Got my Obama sticker on the car yesterday. Sure are a lot of friendly folks out there with what must be arthritis in some of their digits waving at me.

A trick I learned along time ago. When somebody sends you a bird, answer with a flock of five. Gives me a laugh and confuses the heck out of the recipient.

Just saw on the TV news

Womens top issue in this election-Abortion! Really? Shouldn't it be the economy, jobs, or even pay? I guess as long as they can have an abortion and free birth control, they don't need a job. Just the way it appears to me...

By the way, I'm a woman, who works a full time job, paid for my own birth control when I was younger (and needed it) even without having insurance at the time.

The 5th ranter is talking

The 5th ranter is talking about a HOLDING cell. A person has not been found guilty when they are put in a holding cell. Not all in a holding cell are guilty. As for requiring a voter to show proof of paying federal taxes, then older folks not working, some college students, and sick and handicapped people would not be allowed to vote. It's not going to happen. Some are always thinking up ideas to purge voting lists so their candidates have a better chance of winning.
