A refueling shutdown will begin Friday at S.C. Electric & Gas Company’s V.C. Summer nuclear plant in Jenkinsville, S.C.

The plant, about 75 miles from Augusta, is one of two sites in the U.S. where new commercial power reactors are under construction, with Georgia’s Plant Vogtle being the other one.

Refueling outages are scheduled in 18-month cycles that allow large crews to replace fuel assemblies and perform maintenance and inspections.

Plant Vogtle’s Unit 1 was shut down in September for refueling and remains offline, with a restart to be scheduled soon.
