Three-time Grammy-nominated artist Janelle Monáe will visit students at Paine College on Thursday before headlining the Westobou Festival later that evening.

Her visit is focused on encouraging students to vote in the 2012 presidential election, according to a news release.

Paine students will also hold a voter-registration drive among other activities Thursday to celebrate National Student Day, which promotes social responsibility among college students.

Paine has held voter-registration drives in conjunction with various groups since August. Monáe’s visit is the campus’ latest effort to encourage the community to participate in the democratic process.

“Exercising our right to vote is extremely important,” Keyla Connie, president of Wesley Fellowship, said in a news release. “We appreciate celebrities like Janelle Monáe lending her support towards events like this to uplift the importance of voting.”
