Sentenced to death in 1991, Davis maintained his innocence until he was executed by lethal injection on Sept. 21, 2011. Several prominent politicians and leaders, including President Carter, called upon the courts to give Davis a new hearing, which was granted in 2010 to hear evidence that some witnesses had recanted their testimony identifying Davis as the killer. The court upheld his conviction and the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles denied Davis clemency.
The march will begin at 6 p.m. at the Paine College library and end at the college chapel for a support the NAACP National moratorium against the death penalty, an organization press release said.
“The NAACP is asking citizens, churches, Greek organizations, youth groups from throughout the community, join them and the Paine College Chapter in this tribute by keeping Mr. Davis memory alive,” the release said.
