The Richmond County coroner is asking the family of a recently deceased man to come forward and claim his body.

Edward P. Winter, 63, was found dead Wednesday on the wheelchair ramp of his apartment building at 1739 McNally St., according to Coroner Grover Tuten.

A neighbor saw Winter, who had lung cancer, vomiting blood on the ramp as he was trying to get out of his apartment. When an ambulance arrived, Winter was pronounced dead, Tuten said.

Tuten said a relative made contact with his office after the death but provided a nonworking telephone number and has not returned to claim the body. Winter’s unclaimed body is one of three the coroner’s office is holding.

“It’s a common occurrence locally,” Tuten said.

Tuten asks that anyone related to Winter call his office at (706) 821-2382 to make arrangements.

This poor man not only died

This poor man not only died this horrible death all by himself but now no one cares enough about him to claim him as their own. How very tragic. May you rest in peace Mr. Winter ... my heart breaks for you sir.

If they claim him, they have

If they claim him, they have to bury him. Funerals are pricy. I do feel bad for this man, though, but he has passed and is out of his misery. Someone needs to do the right thing and put him in his final resting place.

Yeah Rogue, I understand that

Yeah Rogue, I understand that perfectly ... but cremation is less than $500.00. It just seems very disrespectful to leave a family member to me.

Maybe it hits me harder because this is exactly how my father died (minus the being alone when he died and lack of a funeral part).
