Rants & Raves

Comments from readers:

I WAS DRIVING TO work on Bobby Jones Expressway. Just before I crossed Peach Orchard Road, a new, red Camaro and a tan or silver Cadillac passed me, one on each side, drag racing. It was as if my car were standing still. They must have been going in excess of 90 mph. Listen up, sheriff’s department: I travel the expressway every morning going to work and see a lot of speeders. You could really give out some tickets if you would just patrol this area more often.

OUR GRATITUDE GOES out to the Lincoln County EMS. Words can’t express the wonderful job and the kindness and respect that Casey Broom, Jordan Johnson, William Bradford and the 911 operator showed us on a recent morning. We want them to know that they were such a blessing and so very appreciated. Take pride in serving the county on a daily basis. May the Lord shine on each of you.

RANTS FOR AUGUSTA Regional Airport Authority. Please stop wasting your time, money and energy promoting the Augusta airport until you fix the pathetic and unreliable service provided by Delta Air Lines from Atlanta.

COLLEGE SPORTS HAS taken over colleges until the purpose of colleges is not to educate but to allow big money to manipulate people, no matter the cost to the victims. If Penn State and other colleges want to become places of education again, they would end all sports.

MY NAME FOR THE new university is Augusta National University. That will really be name recognition.

PETERSBURG SQUARE residents pay too much in rent to have your community looking like a landfill. Put your trash in the trash bin.

I WANT TO THANK the people who stayed with my daughter after she had a wreck on U.S. Highway 25 in Trenton. You do not know how much I appreciate your kindness. Thank the good Lord for people like you. God bless you all.

THIS IS A RANT FOR the Richmond County Board of Education charging an obscene amount for teachers to print from their computer. Six cents per page printed from a computer doesn’t include the cost of paper. Outrageous!

THE ABSURD DEBATE over naming the merged schools continues, but one thing is for sure. The word “humble” will never be used by these “leaders.” They never heard the word.

It's not a debate; it's an unanimous protest of the newly designated name. It's not absurd because it's a justifiable protest. The not so humble leaders part I agree with.

Name outrage

I wonder how many folks can remember the outrage that people felt when the Vietnam war dragged on. Or when the 2000 vote was decided by the Supreme Court. Or when JFK, MLK, or RFK were assassinated. Or when 9/11 happened. The naming of a university that is not popular with the locals is not the end of the world. You will have to move on with bitterness and dejection unless there is some ray of hope that it can be undone. That remains to be seen.

Sales tax continuing to increase

Rant 3... The airport must be doing something right, because Augusta regional continues to be one of the fastest growing airports in the US... 90% growth rate since the year 2006...

I thought the sky was falling here in Augusta...

The 2012 July sales tax revenue was 1.38% higher compared to 2011, and 1.23% higher than projections...

New home construction is also up in Augusta and the metro for 2012 compared to 2011.

Many people(including me) said the Kroc Center would help improve Harrisburg, and it's starting to spread from Broad street to Walton Way.. The Cookout(new restaurant) was approved today on the edge of Harrisburg, and will open on at 1801 Walton Way(empty lot at Walton Way/Crawford Avenue intersection).. This goes along perfect with the Walmart neighborhood market/other amenities coming to 15th street next year...
http://appweb.augustaga.gov/planning_zoning/plazid_display.asp?zID=4334

I got the chance to see both of the plants under construction in South Augusta today.. Starbucks $172 million(purchased 100 acres in order to expand in the future) & Rockwood $115 million(recently purchased an additional 33 acres after the plant was approved back in Feb)...

Hey Shrimp and Jake

The political ads are getting bad. Accusing Romney of being responsible for the woman dying because she lost her job. The commercials showing Allen West wearing boxing gloves beating up old women. I guess anything to get the focus off the issues.

Just curious

but how many think that Regents University in Virginia will follow up with the threatened lawsuit? And how many think that Dr Azziz should pay for said lawsuit. It kinda ticks me off knowing that Regents University contacted the Board of Retards, err Regents, about the name and were completely ignored. On second thought let the BOR AND Azziz foot the bill for the upcoming lawsuit and leave my tax money out of it.

Myfather15 put this on another article..

Just an example of what I'm

Just an example of what I'm saying; I grew up in the mountains and where I lived at we had a large waterfall that was over 100 feet high. It seemed every year there were a couple deaths of people jumping off the falls. It was usually a group of college kids who didn't live there and didn't know the falls the way the locals did. They would come down and think it was "cool" to jump off the falls. Rarely ever did you see a local person being killed there.

When I read that I realized THAT is what is wrong with the college naming......locals won't jump off the cliff naming the college.....they wouldn't try to be "ccol".....a local person would do the RIGHT thing with love in their heart.....

Just for you RKill

Fried Okra

Ingredients
6 cups oil, for frying
1/2 cup cornmeal
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons House Seasoning, recipe follows
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
2 pounds fresh okra, sliced 1/2-inch thick
1/2 cup buttermilk

Directions

Heat oil in a large, heavy-bottomed skillet or Dutch oven to 350 degrees F. (You may not need to use this much oil; do not fill the pan more than halfway up the sides with oil.)

In a medium bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, House Seasoning, and cayenne pepper. Dip okra in buttermilk and then dredge in cornmeal-flour mixture to coat well. Carefully add okra to the hot oil and cook until golden brown. (It may be necessary to fry the okra in batches.) Remove from oil, drain on paper towels, and then serve immediately.

House Seasoning:

1 cup salt

1/4 cup black pepper

1/4 cup garlic powder

Mix ingredients together and store in an airtight container for up to 6 months.

Now when you make this invite your friends over..:)

We need more than lap dogs on here...we need

I'M a lean dog, a keen dog, a wild dog, and lone;

I'm a rough dog, a tough dog, hunting on my own;

I'm a bad dog, a mad dog, teasing silly sheep;

I love to sit and bay the moon, to keep fat souls from sleep.

I'll never be a lap dog, licking dirty feet,

A sleek dog, a meek dog, cringing for my meat,

Not for me the fireside, the well-filled plate,

But shut door, and sharp stone, and cuff and kick, and hate.

Not for me the other dogs, running by my side,

Some have run a short while, but none of them would bide.

O mine is still the lone trail, the hard trail, the best,

Wide wind, and wild stars, and hunger of the quest!

Cape Kennedy

Speaking of the university name change, does anyone else remember when President Johnson went on TV shortly after President Kennedy died and declared that the NASA complex in Florida would be re-named the Kennedy Space Center and that the entire real estate down there would be re-named Cape Kennedy? People around the country sort of shrugged their shoulders, but the people of Florida became very upset. They signed petitions, they staged protests, they wrote their senators. It took many years, but another president, years later, rescinded Johnson's executive order. Yes, the NASA complex is still the Kennedy Space Center, but the real estate reverted to its traditional name, Cape Canaveral.

It can be done, folks. The process that created Georgia Regents University was a political process. It will take a political process to undo it.

Rolling my eyes

Hey Jake, feel free to spare us the rhetoric about the 2000 election being decided by the Supreme Court. If your boy Gore would have won his own home state then the whole Florida debacle never happens. Even Mondale won his own home state when he got clobbered by Reagan!!!!

Three more US soldiers killed

... by Afghan soldiers. This is the third attack this week -- though it's barely reported -- not really news, I suppose. Anyone out there tech-savvy enough to send me a link of The Obamessiah apologizing to the Arab world in general. and the Afghanis in particular for this? Like to see the part where the families of those soldiers receive their cheques from Mr Kharzai's envoy as well.

Anyone?

Anyone?

My Boy

Ummm.....Where did I say Gore was "my boy". I didn't vote for him or Dubya. I was just citing examples of peoples outrage. I could have used other examples, like most notably for many who post here, the election of Obama in 2008. The point, which you didn't seem to get, is that people get outraged all the time but you have to either change the situation (if possible) or accept and move on. Seething in bitterness is never a good thing.

But Jake.....

....You lumped the 2000 election in the same analogy as three assassinations and 9/11. From the readers' point of view it would be logical to conclude that some personal outrage must have been involved for a writer to do that. Nobody died when the Supreme Court made that decision (although they probably had to put Dan Rather, Keith Olbermann, and everybody at CNN on suicide watch for a few days).
