Forty-four barbers donated their time and skill at the May Park Community Center on Monday to give area children free haircuts before they go back to school.

Hundreds of children, along with their parents, participated in the Foxie 103 Jamz Cuts Back to School Bash at the center. Perry Broadcasting and Augusta Recreation, Parks & Facilities were the hosts of the event.

Velvet Perry, Perry’s vice president and general manager, said more than 2,000 kids attended the event and that the 1,500 bags of paper, pencils, rulers, binders and folders donated by the company were all given away.

Forty-four barbers and employees of two hair salons also donated their time and skills Monday to give kids fresh haircuts before they head back to school this month. School resumes in Columbia County today and in Richmond County next Monday.

“It’s been a wonderful event,” Perry said. “This is all about this community and giving back, and that’s exactly what we were able to do today.”
