New director named for regional library system

Augusta will have a new library director come October.

The East Central Georgia Regional Library System board named Darlene Price, an administrative librarian for the U.S. Air Force Civil Service, as the new regional library director at a meeting Thursday, according to board Chairwoman Audrey Thomas.

Price, a native of Washington, Ga., has spent most of her 28-year career working as a civil service librarian for the Air Force. She has been an administrative librarian for 13 years and now works at the civil service headquarters at Ramstein Air Base in Germany.

She holds a master of library science degree from North Carolina Central University in Durham and is working on a doctorate at the University of Alabama in Montgomery, Thomas said.

Although Price was not able to travel to Augusta for an interview, Thomas said, board members were impressed with her interview online via Skype.

“She interviewed quite well,” Thomas said. “Her personality really showed through.”

Thomas said Price was selected from a pool of eight finalists for the position, which became vacant in March when Director Teresa Cole resigned after less than a year on the job. Mashell Fashion, a 27-year library employee, has been serving as interim director while the board of trustees mounted a new search for a replacement.

Thomas said that Price will start Oct. 15 but that her salary has not been determined.

“It will be set within a few weeks; I cannot say right now,” she said.
