The man, later identified as Joshua Granade, of Augusta, was driving a Chevrolet S10 pickup east on Bobby Jones near the Gordon Highway exit about 4 p.m. when the items blew out. When he got out to pick them up, he was struck by a Pontiac G6 traveling east, deputies said.
Granade went through the Pontiac’s windshield, but he was alert when the fire department’s first responders arrived, police said.
He was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital with fractures to his legs and upper-body injuries, authorities said. He was in good condition Sunday night, a hospital spokesman said. The driver of the Pontiac was not seriously injured.
Deputies said traffic was slowed on Bobby Jones but never halted.
