Activists seek board’s ouster

CLAYTON, GA. — Protesters want the board of directors to resign from a north Georgia animal shelter that promised not to kill pets but is accused of euthanizing several of them.

The protesters collected signatures on a petition Saturday calling for the resignation of the board of directors overseeing the Boggs Mountain Humane Shelter in Tiger. The shelter’s former director has been fired and its board chairwoman has resigned.

The TV station previously reported that the shelter ran a so-called “Luck Dog and Cat” program. By paying at least $100, people could sponsor animals at the no-kill shelter. The money was supposed to cover veterinary treatments.

But documents show some of the pets were put down.

Body found in car trunk identified

COVINGTON, GA. — A body found in the trunk of a burning car in Atlanta has been identified as a missing Newton County man.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office said 49-year-old Gregory Vernon Harris died because he was smothered. His death has been ruled a homicide.

The Rockdale Citizen reports that the car was discovered July 14 in the backyard of a vacant house. Investigators said the Infiniti was registered to Harris, who had been reported missing by the Newton County Sheriff’s office a day earlier.

Harris’ sister had alerted local authorities because the family was unable to reach her brother. Authorities said that the sister went to check on her brother at his home. She reported that his belongings at the residence seemed out of place and disturbed.

Air Force Reserve has new leader

ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE, GA. — Thousands of Air Force reservists across the U.S. are getting a new commander at their Georgia headquarters.

Lt. Gen. James F. Jackson is scheduled to take over as leader of the Air Force Reserve Command in a ceremony Monday. The command is based at Robins Air Force Base south of Macon.

As commander, Jackson will be in charge of supervising 71,400 Americans who serve in the Air Force Reserves. The job makes Jackson the top adviser on reservist issues.

Jackson has served at the Pentagon as deputy to the chief of the Air Force Reserve since 2010.

He replaces Lt. Gen. Charles E. Stenner Jr., the reserve commander since 2008.

Win for the poor animals and the people that were duped into donating.
