The inaugural Get Down Downtown adds a new spin to First Friday in August.

GET DOWN DOWNTOWN

For more information, visit the event's Facebook page.

Local non-profits, business owners, and downtown residents organized two new events for the Aug. 3 festival to encourage people to come downtown and support First Friday. A shooting following July’s event wounded six and prompted speculation as to whether First Friday should or would continue.

Get Down Downtown begins with a free, family-friendly event at the Augusta Common at 5 p.m. Tara Scheyer & the Mud Puppy Band will perform, along with Folly & the JAMP Masters from the James Brown Academy of Music Pupils. It will also include inflatables for children, a petting zoo and food trucks.

Music on the River begins at 8 p.m. at the Jessye Norman Amphitheater on the Riverwalk. Bloodkin, Stewart & Winfield and Funk You will perform. Craft beer and food from a variety of food trucks will be available. Advance tickets for Music on the River are $12 and available online.

The Westobou Festival will also launch ticket sales in conjunction with Get Down Downtown. Buy tickets for the fifth annual festival at the ticket box office at 965 Broad St., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday or see westoboufestival.com.

To learn more or purchase tickets, see the Get Down Downtown page on Facebook.

Hmmmm I think I'll pass.

Hmmmm I think I'll pass. After the mass murder in Colorado, Regal Cinemas had more police presence than downtown ever has. Richmond County, the security companyAND the Marshal's office were in full force, ready for someone to act up so why can't they do the same this one night of the month? As for First Friday, if they got out of their vehicles and walked around downtown I would feel safer than just having them driving around controlling traffic.

I don't think I will let the criminal element decide what my plans will be. Staying at home because of recent events is just the same as giving up. I hope everyone comes out to show these thugs that we run this country and not them. Count me in.

So what time does it end?

Make sure you leave then instead of hanging around for the rotter element to show up.

Peace and Love Everybody

Don't hide and run. When the Civil War came to our country, do you think George FREAKING Washington took his wig off. Of course not. When Spiderman lost his superpowers do you think he left MJ. Nope. What about when the Beatles broke up. Did they stop making music? Naw man.

None of the above statements make sense, but this concert and First Friday does! There will be ample security, and it is an excellent time for this community to stand up for what is right. Don't be afraid. People can smell fear and it stinks.

Augusta will be a staple of

Augusta will be a staple of the Southeast in 15 years probably sooner.....

I will bet anyone. Do your homework boys and girls! This next First Friday is a statement about our city. Masters, Merger, Fort Gordon, SRS, Plant Vogel, and oh yea wake up and smell the coffee cause Starbucks just broke ground. The land is cheap and the investors smell it. Boom!

Believe in the city and the city will believe in you. Karma is real people.

Peace

hmmm

So we haven't had a decent event at the river amphitheater in over a year, and then they pull an event out of their butts on the worst day to go downtown?!?!? Why would anyone in their right mind want to go downtown for the August First Friday. This event will fail as usual and then they will blame Augusta residents for not supporting.... Maybe try having something like this on a normal Friday or Saturday and see your attendance skyrocket. Downtown will be filled with overzealous empowered police, people who think they can make a difference :), and thugs. This is a horrible idea, at least give the police a few months to get things under control down there.

This is to all you Negative citizens

Its people like you that abandon things when times get hard that leave us in the predicament that we are in now with Augusta/Downtown. Its about time we join together and do something positive for our city! The Riverwalk has slowly declined over the past 10 years and FIRST FRIDAY usually consists of Broad street. I'm glad they are getting back to our roots "The River". This sounds like a great idea and my friends and I would love to support it!!!!

Do it Downtown.

I am breaking my 32 week self imposed exile from posting here on the Chronicle webpage to show my support for this initiative. I will be attending this event and I urge all law abiding citizens that are fed up with the decline in our city to show up and support the downtown merchants and small businesses.

It's great that all these

It's great that all these people want downtown to flourish, but this can't be a one and done event. The reason why first Friday is where it's at now is because it was abandoned by all organizations that were affiliated with it. these events must continue to bring folks down every month, heck every weekend for the next year for things to get better. The downtown development people need to quit stifiling growth and prosperity. We don't need a Starbucks factory in grove town, we need a Starbucks store on 10th and broad, an Eddie Bauer across the street, and a Kroger down the block. This town just does not get IT, it will never be a cute boutique downtown like Aiken or Greenville.

No it can't be done in one event but people like you are the reason Augusta can't keep things like this going monthly. You won't support it so it never even has a chance to get off the ground. If Augusta would get behind something for once Downtown would flourish.

@downtown1 those are some

@downtown1 those are some broad generalizations from someone who doesn't know me, in fact I support events and businesses in downtown 5-6 times a week. I will let the professionals deal with the first Friday crowd for a couple months and continue to support downtown Augusta the other 30 days of the month.

I thought you were "offed" but I hope you will still contribute even though the parameters of contributing can sometimes be restricting.

I hope the community comes out for this event in a show of force.

Looks like a fun event. It's good to see that there are people that care enough about Augusta to make things happen. Surely these folks will outnumber the complainers and whiners that always see the bad in everything and choose to sit back and complain rather than give their time to help fix the problem. It's a fact that those that sit back and complain are usually the ones that are not willing to help in any way shape or form, and rather are part of the problem itself.

CG jtf, was being sarcastic

Because Respects' first post was historically inaccurate!! jtf, I got the joke!I also kinda like the idea of at least TRYING to take back downtown...We as citizens should try, but let's not forget that we also need help from city leaders. Some of those same people are the ones who let downtown "down" by either not doing their jobs or doing them halfway, which allowed the sense of lawlessness to prevail just often enough for it to get out of control....
