Victim advocates protest Haley veto

COLUMBIA — Advocates for rape victims and survivors themselves asked legislators Monday to override South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley’s veto of $454,000 for rape crisis centers, calling the cut and her explanation callous.

The veto strikes money disbursed to the 15 nonprofit crisis centers statewide, which helped more than 5,000 victims last year – 25 percent of them younger than 13. Crisis center employees and volunteers stay with victims in the hospital, in police offices and through the court process. The centers also provide individual and family counseling, as well as anti-violence education in the schools in an effort to break generational cycles of violence; 50,000 students attended the sessions last year.

Clemency denied death row inmate

ATLANTA — The Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles has voted to deny clemency to death row inmate Warren Lee Hill, who is facing execution Wednesday.

The board announced its decision Monday after hearing arguments in the case Friday. Hill was convicted in 1991 and sentenced to death for killing a fellow inmate while serving a life sentence for the slaying of his girlfriend.

His lawyer, Brian Kammer, argued that Hill is mentally disabled and therefore shouldn’t be executed.
