'Chronicle' receives 15 awards for sports

The Augusta Chronicle won 15 awards, including seven for first place, at the annual Georgia Sports Writers Association contest Sunday in Lawrenceville, Ga. The Chronicle won first place in the state in best sports section, best Sunday section and best special section.

Scott Michaux won three awards, including first place for best columnist. Sports editor John Boyette won first place in the best feature or series, non-deadline pro sports category with his story on the mystery of Bobby Jones and Alister MacKenzie. Billy Byler won two awards, including first place in best event story on deadline pro sports on the Augusta GreenJackets clinching a playoff berth.

Wayne Staats won two awards, including first place in news story on deadline high school sports with his coverage of the Warren County-Hancock Central brawl.

David Westin won two second-place awards and a third for his golf coverage, while Chris Gay won third for his obituary of Thomson football coach Luther Welsh.
