Part of Wrightsboro Road near Grovetown was shut down Wednesday afternoon while Columbia County authorities contained a natural gas leak.

The leak was caused by a traffic accident at the intersection of Kingston Road, according to Pam Tucker, director of Columbia County Emergency and Operations Division.

Tucker said repair crews from Atlanta Gas Light were called in and two nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution.

Martinez Fire Department firefighters responded to the scene just before 4 p.m. along with Columbia County sheriff’s deputies. The scene was cleared by 6 p.m., fire dispatchers said.
