Rants & Raves

I AM APPALLED OUR state government will pour out money for drugs and alcohol rehab programs, but cuts budgets for the developmentally disabled who never did drugs, abused alcohol or made wrong choices. Parents struggle every day to find programs in a system that is so fragmented and broken.

WHO IS ALVIN MASON kidding? Last week’s rally on the courthouse steps was nothing more than a protest.

THIS IS A RAVE for the committee who put together the ARC/Westside 40th Class reunion. Between my wife and me, we have attended six class reunions and without a doubt this was way far the best and the best I have ever heard of. The tribute given by Ed Turner was awe-inspiring. Looking forward to the next one.

WHY ARE GEORGIA and South Carolina the only states building nuclear power plants, while the other 48 are building gas-fired plants due to the cheap price of natural gas? Because the rate hikes are easy to obtain. Thanks, PSC!

WONDER WHY ANY HIGH SCHOOL seniors who did not earn a real diploma, are allowed to walk at graduation ceremonies? The seniors who worked hard to pass the tests, and who went that extra mile to receive their high school diplomas should be the only ones to receive honors that special night.

DON’T YOU THINK Alvin Mason should get his own problems sorted out before he even thinks about leading others?

TO THE THREE EMT students from Augusta Technical College who were en route to take their certification and stopped at the accident on I-20 May 11, I want to take this opportunity to thank you for the fantastic job you guys did.

A CERTIFICATE OF completion does not mean you graduated! It means you failed and you do not get a diploma, but yet get the walk in the EXACT same ceremony as those who earned the right to be there. That seems very unfair.

THIS IS A RANT TO person who stole the paid-for lottery tickets at Greg’s Gas on Georgia Avenue around 10:50 a.m. on May 8. That’s why they didn’t win, they didn’t belong to you. May God bless you…thief.

WE STARTED RECYCLING three years ago. Now we don’t need twice-a-week garbage pick-up. Once for garbage, once for recycling is plenty. Anyone can recycle and cut their garbage way down.

Recycling

Of course anyone can recycle but it takes a "change of habit" which many are challenged to make happen. It isn't that hard to do in your community I'm sure. Maybe this will be a motivater, Michael Moore (you know of misguided pinko liberal fame) said in one of his books that he believes that recycling is a waste of time as he claims to have followed a recycle truck to the dump only to find they dump garbage and recycling material in the same spot. Now how many of you out there believe Michael Moore?

Why would a student who

Why would a student who didn't make the grade want to take the walk with graduates?
Have they no pride? Why is it allowed. Somebody, somewhere, ought to know better and take charge.
What a mess...

Graduation walk

Come on guys, don't you realize that little Johnny and Susie would have their feelings hurt if they couldn't walk with their classmates? We must take that into account. School is no place for children to learn life lessons. You learn those when you enter the "real" world.

OOPS, they are entering the "real" world. If you can't make the grade so to speak, you don't deserve the accolades. Sit in the audience and applaud the ones who did earn their diplomas. Key word here "earn".

Economic recovery

As most of you know I earn my living driving a truck. Hauling the products you use every day. What are we hauling now? Durable good and staples. What are we not hauling? Non-durable and expendables. The things you purchase mostly because you want them. When the economy is good there is a lot of that type of freight. When it is not so good, very little. The reason being that people are not buying what they can live without. The expendable income that it takes isn't there.

We (drivers) were the first to feel it when the economy started down and will be the first to feel it when the recovery does start. 5 years ago or so we could count on 2 or 3 loads each month from the west coast hauling mostly electronics, from Asian countries, the the east. I honestly can't remember when the last load was. I guess it was just before Christmas.

When I can pull into a truckstop at 3AM and find several empty parking spaces that should tell you something about how much freight there is. My partner and I normally switch around 3AM and again at 3PM. When there is freight, forget finding a parking spot at that time of morning.

Point is, just because somebody in power says it, it doesn't mean it is so. Look around folks. The signs are there. The economy has a ways to go before recovery is here.

Real Estate Agents...ya better read this...

ATLANTA —

Real estate agents are warning metro Atlanta home sellers to hide their medications.

Drug abusers are targeting home showings to steal prescription medicine to abuse and to sell on the street.

"They're looking for pain medication and stimulant drugs, such as Ritalin. You never know who's coming in for a showing; if he's for lack of a better word, a junkie," said Brandie Miner of the Georgia Association of Realtors.

Miner told Channel 2's Tom Regan real estate agents have reported instances of couples scheduling home showings for the purpose of searching a home and stealing drugs from bathroom cabinets or drawers.

"A lot of times, they will work in teams. One person will distract the realtor, and the other person will wander around and go into the medicine cabinets and steal prescription pain medicine,"

Re: RK's 05:49

I cannot say I was surprised you received a 'downer' on your post. Speaking "truth to power" is only acceptable when the power is conservative-leaning or the "truth" is the liberal party line.

As for the economy, it IS getting better; it's just us ignorant racist white trash do not understand the wisdom of the collective tribalism of our ethnic betters.

OK Azziz....here is the name ya been looking for...:)

NEW YORK — "MONDEWHAAAAT?"

The sarcasm was palpable in the one-word headline that appeared in The New York Post on the day after Kraft Foods revealed that it planned to name its new global snack business "Mondelez," an interpretation of a mash-up of the Latin words for "world" and "delicious." But that wasn't the only dig.

One blogger teased that she would've been "stifling giggles" if she'd been in meetings to determine the name. A Forbes contributor suggested a trick for remembering how to say it: "Just think Bush Administration Secretary of State. You know, Mon-de-leza Rice." Crain's Business Chicago tittered that it bears close resemblance to a vulgar Russian term for a sexual act.

Michael Mitchell, a Kraft spokesman, said executives took all the joking in stride, and he's quick to point out why the Crain's observation didn't alarm the company: "The name has to be mispronounced to get that unfortunate meaning."

The made-up moniker, pronounced "mon-dah-LEEZ," became a punch line after it was unveiled in March. On Wednesday, Kraft shareholders will decide whether to approve the name for the company's business that sells global snack brands such as Oreos, Fig Newton and Cadbury.

The problem is the price.

"Anyone can recycle and cut their garbage way down."

Most people are not arguing about the once a week service. The problem is cutting the service in half and keeping the twice a week price, thereby effectively doubling the price we are being charged. And NOBODY from our local government has even made an attempt to explain the doubling of the price. Why? Because it's money they can steal from you and you have no recourse or rebuttal. Yes, I can live with once a week service BUT if I am getting HALF THE SERVICE I only want to pay HALF THE RATE. Anything else is simply robbery by your local government. They are using money collected as a fee for a service for other things.

Dear I AM APPALLED , I agree

Dear I AM APPALLED , I agree with you. The war on drugs is over IMHO, and we lost. All of the billions of dollars spent on ineffective drug interdiction should be spent on rehab for those wanting to get clean. In a free society, those choosing the drug way of life should be allowed to rot themselves into oblivion. Freedom includes freedom to screw yourself up. Only the truly infirm should benefit from the labor of others. I feel that a citizen can not delegate to the government to do something that one can not do themselves. I do not have the authority to take money from neighbor A and give it to neighbor B. Neither should the government.

Graduation no longer special.

Allowing the "no-go" students to participate in the graduation is a slap in the face to the young men and women who actually did the work and earned a diploma. The "give everybody a trophy" policy is one of the contributing factors to "everthing is free and I don't have to work" attitude that is so pervasive in our country today. Kudos to the "real" graduates. The "walkers" will soon find out what a "certificate" is worth.
