Columbia County employees are planning a cookout fundraiser for hospitalized Elections Director Deborah Marshall.

The cookout, announced Thursday, will be held June 8 behind the Columbia County Library in Evans. Hamburger or hot dog lunches will be available for $5, and additional donations will be encouraged for the Marshall family.

Reservations for plates at the cookout can be made by e-mailing marshallsfamfund@yahoo.com.

Marshall, 48, has been hospitalized at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital since surgery April 9 for a gioblastoma, a brain tumor.

Her condition has steadily improved since the surgery, and she was expected to be moved this week from the hospital’s intensive care unit to a regular room, her mother, Henrietta Smith, said.

Physicians and the family also were to discuss this week the next steps in Marshall’s treatment, including possible radiation therapy to battle remnants of the malignant tumor.

Marshall, a Board of Elections staffer since 1984 and the director of the office since 2000, was hospitalized April 6 after complaining of severe headaches.

In Marshall’s absence, the Board of Elections office has been operating under the direction of Registration Coordinator Nancy Gay. Activity in the office is expected to pick up next week, with qualifying for local and state elections set to begin Wednesday and conclude at noon Friday.
