Shriners to hold annual conference, parade in Augusta

  • Follow Metro

Shriners from across Georgia will be in Augusta for a statewide conference Thursday and Friday and a parade Saturday.

The Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine and the Daughters of Isis will hold the annual Georgia Desert Conference at Augusta Marriott at the Convention Center. About 500 Shriners and Daughters of Isis are expected to attend.

The direct visitor spending is estimated to be more than $200,000, according to Michelle Bovian, a sales manager for the Augusta Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The Gala Day Parade will be 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at Dyess Park. The event is open to the public. The parade will attract Shriners from across the Southeast, said Danny West, of Stolkin Temple No. 22.

Each year, the conference is held in a different Georgia city. Next year, it will be held in Valdosta, West said.
