Rants & Raves

Comments from readers:

WHO DIED AND MADE Dr. Azziz king of Richmond County? This is getting ridiculous that this man is running the city of Augusta. It functioned for a long time before he got here. If he was on the ballot, he would be voted out.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT closing all of these streets? Don‘t these people know how to cross the street on their own? That is the problem, not the traffic, not the speeders, but people not paying attention to what is coming toward them and waiting for the light.

PRESIDENT OBAMA SAYS, “I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth.” This is true, but President Obama did get a silver spoon education. Punahou, where President Obama went to high school, is one of the most expensive prep schools in America.

RANT TO THE teachers who get drunk at Mi Rancho each week. You are supposed to be professional and be role models to today’s children. However, you come into the restaurant, get drunk, get loud and slur your words when singing karaoke. Richmond County board members need to visit Mi Rancho and see these teachers in action.

THE EARTHQUAKE IN Appling last week was a sign from God that we do not need a traffic light in Appling. What a waste of taxpayer’s money.

MR. BECK BEING fired is a mockery to the Richmond County government.

IT IS A FEDERAL LAW that the bus drivers wear a seat belt. Bus drivers need to buckle up and not fly through these neighborhoods.

RANT TO SCHOOL nurses and parents who can’t get the lice epidemic under control. Yes, private schools get lice, too. Is it the nurse trying to keep things quiet or is it the parents who don’t fully treat their children? Enough is enough.

HARLEM, YOU HAVE a school zone on Gordon Highway where there is no school. I have never seen a single person cross Gordon Highway while the school zone is active in the 10 years I’ve been commuting that way. Given the strict enforcement, the low speed (25), the lack of a school on that road, and lack of children in the school zone, it seems to have more to do with revenue than safety.

THIS IS A RANT to the folks who left the parking lot a pigsty at Riverview Park in North Augusta on April 21. I was told it was a basketball tournament. Take your trash with you next time you use our facility. It was Earth Day. Shame on you!

There are 2 schools in Harlem

There are 2 schools in Harlem located less than 2 blocks from Gordon Hwy and children do cross this road as they walk to school. For some unreason, Harlem does not have a crossing guard there.

I looked on the CCBOE web

I looked on the CCBOE web site and used mapquest to find the schools locations. The Ranter is wrong, and Wise Old Man is correct. It is perfectly reasonable to lower the speed limit during morning and afternoon school times.

By the way, in Harlem they call the thorofare Milledgeville Rd. not Gordon Hwy.

http://g.co/maps/nqbch

Looks to me like the two schools are well away from the actual road. I have been through that area, myself, and do not recall any crosswalks in the school zone and there are no traffic lights in the school zone.

Maybe it made sense to have the zone there at some point, but demographics have changed enough to make it kind of pointless now?

Using the map you provided,

Using the map you provided, Charlie, it looks like pedestrian and bike-riding students living south of W. Milledgeville Rd. would use W. Boundary or N. Bell to cross the highway to and from school.

I think Walgreens will start

I think Walgreens will start construction in South Augusta on Windsor Spring rd(probably near Tobacco rd) in the next few months...

I don't know the exact date, but after the I-520 expansion is complete Target, Ruby Tuesday, and Chick Fil will make the decision it's time to open in South Augusta.. All three have already expressed interest in the area before..

If you inlcuded Southwest Augusta(Belair rd, Jimmie Dyess, and Gordon Hwy between Jimmie Dyess and Harlem/Grovetown) as South Augusta then the planned retail would be even more impressive...

1. 25 acre shopping center on Jimmie Dyess
http://appweb.augustaga.gov/planning_zoning/plazid_display.asp?zID=4102

2. 10k sq. ft. Shoppes at Dyess Park on Jimmie Dyess
http://appweb.augustaga.gov/planning_zoning/plazid_display.asp?zID=4221

3. 13 acre shopping center at Gordon Hwy/Robinson Ave
http://appweb.augustaga.gov/planning_zoning/plazid_display.asp?zID=4307

4. 11 acre commercial use property at 677 Robinson Avenue

5. Circle K at Gordon Hwy/Robinson Ave

WHY come do bus drivers have to wear seat belts, but school children do not? Does this fit the daffynition of "ambiguity?"

Besides West Augusta and to a

Besides West Augusta and to a lesser extent Aiken(Sams Club and maybe Fresh Market) what other area in the CSRA has the same amount of retail planned??

At the moment The Village at Riverwatch and Wheeler Town Park(Carmax area) unless the name was changed are the only big retail developments..

I think the AC either needs

I think the AC either needs to hire someone else to put together the Rants and Raves or find a better system of posting them. At least half of today's are repeats, and this is a frequent thing.

Yeah, if they're going to

Yeah, if they're going to re-run rants & raves, they at least should re-run really old ones so we would not recognize them as re-runs.

And as far as the re-run about the teachers at Mi Rancho, we might as well re-run RM's comment from April 24. Riverman 1 wrote:

About the teachers getting drunk and slurring their words during karaoke at the restaurant, you are supposed to be a little drunk and slur when you do karaoke. That's the rule.

They tried seatbelts on a few

They tried seatbelts on a few seats on the regular buses, the kids used them as weapons when they got into fights.
Special needs buses have seatbelts..
As for drivers wearing seat belts ,you would have to be a driver to understand why most don't wear them in neighborhoods while picking up the students... If you feel a driver is speeding then call transportation report the bus number, time and street it happened on..
They have GBS,when it's working and cameras,when there working>>LOL!!
