Rants & Raves

Comments from readers:

FOR THE INCONSIDERATE teen who called my wife a “fat pig” at the Walmart on Bobby Jones, I want you to know she has a severe medical condition and what you said truly upset her. Now she doesn’t even want to leave the house. I hope you are really happy with yourself.

WE LOVE THE new trees on Broad Street, but why are they only on one side of the street?

IT IS PITIFUL THAT students at one of the highest-ranking schools, Davidson Fine Arts School, are into drug/medication dealing.

THE STATE OF GEORGIA requires you to have car insurance before they will issue you a drivers’ license. The national health care reform plan requires you to buy health insurance if you are breathing.

I JUST BOUGHT MY groceries and just did have enough to pay for them. Yes I work, and have all my life and nothing makes me madder than to be behind someone in line in front of me using a food stamp card to pay for two grocery carts full of groceries. Working people are tired of deadbeats.

A HUGE RAVE TO Gold Cross Chief of Operations Ernie Doss for watching my 9-year-old son briefly until I could arrive from work while my wife was taken by ambulance to the hospital with severe chest pains.

RANTS FOR THE new library downtown in Augusta. The women’s bathroom was trashed. Someone needs to repaint the doors, and the toilet paper needs to be down-sized a little. Too big for the holder and there were paper towels in the other toilet. It just makes you wonder if people trash their own bathrooms at home.

BRING SHIRLEY LEWIS back! George Bradley fired all of the staff members who knew what they were doing as far as the finances of Paine College; now I think its time to fire him.

ONE PICTURE IS WORTH a thousand words. The front page photo of GHSU’s President Azziz and ASU’s President Bloodworth says a great deal. Azziz appears victorious and poor Bloodworth appears to be a saddened and humiliated.

I LOVED SATURDAY’S editorial about the dog. Our dog rode in the back of the truck to Clarks Hill last weekend. Nobody fussed.

The new library is a place

The new library is a place for the homeless. I would have started a books online library. It would have served more people at a fraction of the cost.

Well, #1 ranter, is this teen

Well, #1 ranter, is this teen currently sucking on soup, pondering the sad untruth of the television tag line, "Teeth are meant to last a lifetime?"

RE #5; My favorite: The well-manicured woman at Kroger's on Columbia road with a cart full of steaks and shrimp pulls out her EBT card from her Dooney & Bourke bag (not a knock-off) and pays for it all. Takes that and and a coupla bags of charcoal out to her 2011 Escalade and I get in my nine-year-old truck and watch her drive away into Spring Lakes.

Yeah, right, the old "welfare

Yeah, right, the old "welfare Cadillac" routine. Always seems to play well in the south. Amazing how when I am in the grocery store and I buy my groceries and go to my car and never notice what other people are buying and what car they are driving or where they are going. I hear "wealth envy" crap on this site a lot but sounds like folks in your parts have EBT card envy. I don't beleive any of it. Next time use your smart phone camera and share a video of the offender.

@Jake. I see you live in California. I read a large family in California can qualify for up to $ 2,000 per month in food stamps. True or False?

raul, I have no idea since I do not know anyone who is in the condition to warrant getting food stamps. Not my crowd. If it is so and they are qualified then so be it. It just amazes me that after reading the online edition of the Chronicle for over 7 years, I have read that same story about the EBT card and the folks always, and I mean always, drive away in an Escalade. So in order to be qualified to get a car loan for an Escalade it sounds like you have to have an EBT card in your neck of the woods.

Jake, interesting concept of EBT card envy. But if the Democrats can use class envy to get votes, maybe Republicans can use EBT envy. Thanks for the idea.

Remember the popular

Remember the popular Summerville, SC High School principal who was pressured to take the stuffed animals he had shot out of his office? He has been hired by a large PA high school by a 9-0 vote of the BOE to be their next principal. He says he loves Summerville, but this is too good of an offer to turn down. The assistant principal at the new school also has mounted animal trophies in his office so maybe it's a more friendly environment to him.

This man is a retired Marine Sergeant which says lots and has by all accounts done a magnificent job at Summerville. SC's loss, PA's gain.

Two super harbors less than a hundred miles apart at a cost of a billion dolllars is toooooo much. I think a study would show one of them would have a positive effect on both states. Referring to the Charleston, Savannah pushes to dredge both deeper to accommodate the new super ships.

As usual, a poster who posts

As usual, a poster who posts "I do not know anyone who is in the condition to warrant getting food stamps. Not my crowd." But also doesn't know how people are qualified. Of course. I dunno whether this proudly proclaimed ignorance is deliberate, but welfare cheats are --like the poor-- always with us. Give away money, and there will be people who get some.

It's easy sitting anonymously behind a keyboard to label anyone who busts your bubble about how your programs are not working or are being mishandled a liar. Gutless, and deceitful, but wilfull ignorance is vital tactic of the apparatchiks of the party of the giveaway plantation.

George posted this at 9:15am-I wonder if the Marihuana is harmless group would agree,,

Tots says-Hi George, you know I love ya man-but; I'm in that group of marijuana folks who believe it's no-more harmful to you than drinking or smoking cigarettes is... Only it's against the law...The clip you posted was back in 1965,people dressed and acted more respectful back then..I'm sure even if he were a pot smoker then, that the TV station would have made him wear a suit to perform.. I think his troubles didn't really start till the 80's..Could be wrong.

But he would have aged and changed by then anyways..And if you cleaned him up and cut his hair,he still looks pretty dang good to be his age..YES he does..

How, they will wonder, did a man so devoid of professional accomplishment beguile so many into thinking he could manage the world's largest economy, direct the world's most powerful military, execute the world's most consequential job?

My reply to some of Jakes

My reply to some of Jakes comment at 11:29-While some of what "dstewartsr" post does look and sound like other comments i've seen on here..I cain't say if he was telling the truth or not,and i don't personally know him..
What i can say from my experience as a cashier working at a Walmarts back in the 90's,is i've seen people using the EBT cards buying steaks and many other idems i couldn't afford while i was working trying to make ends meet...I've also seen them driving really nice vehicles..I know for a fact there is fraud and waste in the EBT food stamp program...

Love you Jake, and always love reading what you have to say..

I wish someone WOULD say something about what's in MY cart, after using MY EBT card....get a life.....O WAIT, they won't, because they will come on AC.com ans post anonymously...which is always easier.

MY POINT: Say it to the person next time.

Why should I say anything to them but Thank You. When they go in and buy a $100 ribeye loin with EBT and bring it into the parking lot and sell it to me for $25, then sell me $100 worth of crab legs for $25. I GOTS MINE!!!

isanotherday1@11:02-Hi; I did go and read the link you posted, and found it insightful for an article from Dec17th 2007...

I still would rather smell the MJ smoke than the cigarette smoke.
But unlike many who feel we need laws for everything; I don't feel there should be a law making an establishment band smoking ..
I just don't go to places that have MJ smoking or cigarette smoking if it bothers me..

iLove...they are too chicken

iLove...they are too chicken to say it in person. I worked in a group home where 9 developmentally disabled persons lived. One of our jobs was to grocery shop for the house. I can only imagine what was said about us buying 900.00 worth of groceries every week. I dont begrudge someone using EBT to pay for groceries a steak or some shrimp...I really dont. I dont know their situation. For all you know that Escalade was paid for and they lost a job or its borrowed so that they can go do some errands. When did we become so judgemental and jealous of everyone else?? Its sad.

after being forced to retire

after being forced to retire i sadly have to admit i tried to get ebt to help with my unwelcome fixed income situation, well i was turned down because my retirement income was 200 dollars over their legal qualifications,i accepted that.i know of people who have lost their jobs or had to take a lower wage job just to get by get ebt ,and im ok with that.then you have the people who just abuse the system or become baby factories just to get ebt or any other freebies,i guess ill have to be alright with that,(dont see that one changing).the one that im NOT alright with is the other day my wife and myself were in wal-mart in north augusta in the check out line, in front of us was a young mexican couple with two kids and three shopping carts full of good stuff, well once the carts were empty and the total was presented to them they let it be known that they needed help in the form of someone in the store who could speak spanish.well after waiting for five minutes help finally arrived in the form of one of the managers, anyway the TOTAL WAS ALITTLE OVER 490 DOLLARS.when they were told this they didnt seem to have a problem with it ,they just smiled and pulled out their EBT card.i thought my head would explode.and worse yet the cashier told me this goes on all day.PEOPLE IM NOT OK WITH THAT.

Hi fftaz71- I've worked in

Hi fftaz71- I've worked in personal care homes that took in Veterans and patients with mental problems..Once they were accepted into those homes ,they lost their rights to receiving food stamps and many other government programs.. But group homes and half way houses may have different guidlines to follow..

But as with most government programs there is always a way to get around those guidlines....I've seen that happen.., And-sorry to say i've even helped..Guess that's why so many have turned a blind eye for so long. Most of us know someone or have done something like this ..But the freebies from the government need to stop....

Riverman.... Have you even

Riverman.... Have you even visited the library downtown?? I'm sure you would go to the one in Evans.. I seriously doubt you visit the one downtown because the new library is FAR from being a place for the local homeless.. The amount of families who live downtown, and use the library for the diffrent family events has increased by far... One of the biggest draws for living downtown is the library, market on the river, etc being located so close...

In June 2011(one year after the library opened) the number of people using the library had increased by 60k( since June 2010)...

Over 200k people use the downtown library every month.... The population of RC is only around 205,000 which means people from Columbia and Aiken County use the library too..
