Macon woman foils robbery attempt with shootout

MACON, Ga. — Authorities in Georgia say a woman foiled a robbery attempt by two armed men by getting into a shootout with them, injuring one man.

Police told The Telegraph that Lulu Campbell, 57, had just dropped off her grandson at her daughter’s house early Saturday when someone demanded money outside her car, threatening to shoot her.

Campbell said she reached for her .38-caliber revolver just as the man fired at her. She felt that bullet whiz by her chest as she fired back, hitting the man in the chest.

“I hurt my back (pushing the seat back to avoid the shot),” she told the newspaper. “I saw the guy in front of me, and I said, ‘Oh my God, there are two of them.’ I said I’m going to take one of them with me. That’s what was in my head.”

When the second man started shooting, Campbell said, she ducked and started firing wildly at the front of the truck, forcing the second man to flee.

“I thought that the only way to protect myself was to run him down,” she said. She ended up calling 911.

Police say 32-year-old Brenton Lance Spencer has been hospitalized and charged with aggravated assault and attempted armed robbery.

They were still seeking the second man.

Campbell’s truck sustained eight bullet holes in the hood and one in the grill. Both front side windows were destroyed.

Campbell, who owns convenience stores and gas stations, always is armed.
