Rants & Raves

I’M AN AUGUSTA STATE University student, so can we please rename the merged school to the “University of Augusta”?

BILL KIRBY’S COLUMN on “stupid” gave me the idea that when people drive while drunk, they should be forced to get an ID that is stamped with “DUI” in large red letters on the ID along with having to give up the other state ID, whether it’s a driver’s license or photo ID. The law about it would be that when they try to buy liquor within a set time (never when DUI results in a death, 10 years for a severe wreck with injuries, etc.), then anyone can see the red DUI and refuse to sell the liquor.

MY CHILD ATTENDED a dance at an elementary school. I was upset to see that there was no security at either one of the doors and that there was no coverage of adults on the dance floor. There was no reason that two fights should have happened at all. Any of the dances that the PTA has put on has been well-staffed and run professionally. My child will not be attending any more dances there until this is corrected.

WE SHOULD REMEMBER that Israel has, by far, the best foreign intelligence service in the world. If they suspect Iran of something, one, they won’t mention it in a way that betrays their own security; and two, Israel is smart enough to often use very low-tech and audacious methods to get at high-tech targets.

FANNIE MAE AND Freddie Mac execs have spent taxpayers into trillions in debt. Now Obama claims he’s tightening down on those execs by capping the pay at half a million dollars a year for one exec. When you can get half a million for failure, imagine what you’d get for success.

I THINK THE Columbia County News-Times should be changed to the Martinez-Evans Times. Even when schools there lose any type of sporting event, they get some big write-up in the paper. Let Harlem or Grovetown beat them all and they won’t even get mentioned.

RAVES TO THE John S. Davidson Fine Arts drama students, production and stagecraft staffers on the performance of Beauty and the Beast. The entire cast and staff were absolutely amazing. You brought tears to my eyes.
