Rants & Raves

Comments from readers:

AH, SPRINGTIME IN Augusta, when the pine trees sneeze pollen all over the place.

I GUESS THE Augusta Commission can do whatever it wants behind closed doors.

WHAT WOULD BE wrong with renaming the Southern Baptists the Great Commission Baptist Church? Wouldn’t such a highfalutin’ name boost the convention’s corporate image?

BIG RANT TO the elected officials of Richmond County. What are we paying you for? Why can’t any of you, leadership included, take the initiative to do something about this outdated town? Regency Mall has been an eyesore for almost 20 years. Now it is probably beyond repair. This structure could have been converted to an outlet mall or something to bring some revenues and visitors into the city.

THANKS TO ALL who stopped and helped my son and his girlfriend on Mike Padgett Highway in the rain. You made sure they were OK and helped us get our truck out of the ditch. I want to thank all that helped us out that night.

A RANT FOR the online commenters of the Rants & Raves. Can you please trade e-mail addresses for your “good mornings” and YouTube posts instead of clogging up the discussion boards?

A HUGE RANT TO the fine, upstanding citizen who walked off with my wife’s only winter coat Feb. 24 at Columbia County park during my daughter’s seventh birthday party. My wife’s been dealing with cancer since October of this past year. Hope you are warm and cozy wearing it. I hope you see this and guilt overwhelms you each time you go to put her coat on.

WHY ARE ALL THESE Walmarts coming to the Augusta area?

WHY WOULD ANYONE think it correct that we should pay for contraception protection for another’s promiscuity?

LET’S STOP SOME of the crime. If murderers were sentenced to die, then hanged on the courthouse lawn for a few days for everyone to see, as they did in the early 1900s, people might have second thoughts and decide not to kill someone.

Thank you, ICL. You are

Thank you, ICL. You are correct. The issue is not whether insurance policies are allowed to cover birth control. They are, and many do. The issue is whether the government can force all health insurance policies to cover birth control. Once the precedent is set for all policies to cover birth control, then the floodgates are open and the government can force them to cover anything they want to.

It's time to elect Mitt Romney and begin the tedious process of repealing Obamacare. Romney has promised he will do it.

Retired Army, I am in total

Retired Army, I am in total agreement with you that God does not force Himself on us. That being said, IMO that does not mean He has to be anonymous. Someone can be right there along side you every day and never force you to do anything, they are not definitely not anonymous but they allow you to make your own choices (free will).

"I began to act as if I believed " This to me is an issue....my belief isn't an act, it is a part of my being. It is because I believe, I choose (free will here) to "act" according to Christ's teachings. I believe most Christians would hope people think well of them but our concern is that our Father thinks well of us. If we live according to His teachings and someone finds it offensive, then they have an issue with God, not us.

Happy, I am sorry if you feel

Happy, I am sorry if you feel my response was trying to change your mind. You posted a statement indicating that if birth control was free we would have less abortions. I was only trying to clarify your statement to make sure I understood correctly what you were saying. Although my view is different from yours, I do believe adults can have a production conversation without feeling as if someone is trying to change their minds.

When my ex and I were dating,

When my ex and I were dating, she got her birth control free. That was over 20 years ago. Guess what, that same organization still provides free birth control. What organization you may ask. It's Planned Parenthood. While I disagree with many of PP's programs, that is one that if everyone who needed it used it there would be a lot less abortions.

Point is, free contraception is already available. Government, get he hell out of my wallet and my bedroom.

I seem to remember an

I seem to remember an insurance company years ago that advertised it would sell policies to non-smokers only. Their gimmick was that they charged lower premiums because their clients did not get smoking-related ailments.

I wonder whether Obamacare does away with charging different premiums based on smoking or drinking or other behavioral patterns. How about life insurance policies charging higher premiums for sky divers?

You can take it to the bank — when Obamacare is totally phased in, your premiums will be higher than they were in 2008.

Part of Obamacare is working

Part of Obamacare is working now. Insurance companies;not taxpayer money, are providing more preventive care, which is less money they have to pay for illnesses. Catching serious diseases before they spread is beneficial for the patient and the insurance company. No co-pay mammagrams catch breast cancer and saves lives, and is less expensive than waiting for the cancer to spread. that is just one example of how the health reform law is working. Many on the right holler like the sky is falling, but I would welcome everyone having to buy insurance. Our tax money pays too much for the uninsured right now. I asked an unisured person yesterday what he would do if he had a serious illiness or accident, and ran up medical bills of over $100,000. He said it is simple. he just would not pay the bills, and would file bankrupt. He owns his own car, cell phone,tv, has a job, and says he can't afford health insurance. He chooses not to buy it. Now if he gets very ill, guess who pays. Tax payers pay. I don't think that is right for us to pay his medical bills. Oh. by the way. He is a repub and opposes the health care reform.

Okay, something doesn't make

Okay, something doesn't make sense. If insurance companies are providing more preventive care, isn't actually tax payer money that is paying for it since some of us are paying the insurance companies?

Also who is paying for the preventive care for those who either choose not to buy insurance or those who can not.....isn't it those tax payers who are paying the insurance companies? Or the taxes those tax payers pay the government to assist programs to provide medical care for the indigent.

If the indigent can not afford to buy medical coverage now, how are they going to afford to buy it when Obamacare is implemented? AND, if the indigent will receive their medical treatment and not be required to pay for it, then who ends up paying for it.....that's right, the tax payers. So how is this any different that what we have now, only those who are paying will pay more, and those who can not afford to will still receive it free.

I would like to know too,

I would like to know too, ICL. As far as I have seen, there is one, possibly two points that I see as a positive, 1) the length of time grown children can remain on parents policies 2) pre existing conditions cannot be used to deny coverage....Yes, BUT, people are not considering how costly the rate up will be. My experience is, it may be available, but I see no way for it to be affordable or even competitive.

I would like to know if anyone has any experience operating with a major medical policy only. We can pay a lot of first costs with the outrageous annual premiums that we are paying. Changing the deductibles has not been any savings.

The only thing I can guess is

The only thing I can guess is that many of the commenters were commenting on religion in general and not on the little girls' accomplishments. Sean doesn't like it when marginally-connected-to-topic comments are made.

Let me answer the question
Unpublished

Let me answer the question being asked around the world today by the Chronicle commentators.
From the desk of Kelly Jasper at 10:28 a.m. this morning...and I directly quote: "A few minutes ago I was told that the comments section for that particular story had been shut down. It had gotten out of control and several items violated the newspaper's comment policy. I'd be glad to check to see if there is any way to continue displaying comments, even when new comments can't be added." And you can thank the "squirrel" later. Peace out.
