Wet week likely, but no White Christmas

Christmas will be cloudy, not snowy

Rain is possible for the majority of this week, but meteorologists at the National Weather Service in West Columbia, S.C., expect Christmas Day to go by with only cloudy weather.

Snow flurries last year the day after Christmas

Last year, Augustans barely missed something of a White Christmas when trace amounts of snow were recorded in the area a day later.

Augusta experienced Christmas weather that was on par for this time of year – a high of 52 and a low of 22.

This year, however, highs are expected to be above average.

Jeff Linton, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service, said the week will start out with temperatures much like last week, with highs in the upper 60s to lower 70s and partially cloudy skies.

By Wednesday, a cold front will increase the chance for rain to 50 percent.

“This front moving through the area Wednesday is going to stall, we believe, so there will be a chance of showers throughout the rest of the week, including Christmas Day. It doesn’t look particularly cold, though,” Linton said.

By Thursday, highs are expected to fall only slightly to the 60s to low 70s.

THE WEEK AHEAD

TUESDAY: High 70, Low 55, 20 percent chance of showers

WEDNESDAY: High 71, Low 53, 60 percent chance of showers mostly before 9 a.m.

THURSDAY: High 71, Low 53, 30 percent chance of showers

FRIDAY: High 68, Low 47, 40 percent chance of showers

SATURDAY: High 64, Low 42, 30 percent chance of showers

CHRISTMAS DAY: High 62 degrees, cloudy
