Rants & Raves

Comments from readers:

ABOUT FOUR WEEKS ago, my 87-year-old grandmother and 89-year-old grandfather decided to go to Wife Saver on Mike Padgett Highway for dinner. When the food was ready and they proceeded to pay, the woman at the register told them the bill had already been paid. The cashier pointed to a woman, and my grandmother gave her a hug and thanked her.

The woman told my grandmother that as she watched them together, they reminded her of her parents and how much she misses them. My grandparents said it was a blessing and they wanted everyone to know that wonderful and caring angels still exist.

Our family would like to thank her for blessing them.

I AM SO SICK of walking into stores and seeing young ladies and even grown women walking around in their pajamas. Have we just become that lazy? You sleep in PJs. … We need to get back to enforcing the old rules, where pants, shirt and shoes are required before entering an establishment.

I WOULD LOVE TO rant on the mayor, sheriff’s office and Augusta Commission, but I can’t. We’re the people responsible for voting in these people who obviously don’t have the best interest of all of Augusta at heart.

A RAVE FOR Augostino’s. My wife and I had the best Thanksgiving meal. The service could not have been better.

I READ SID Mullis’ column on mole problems. My mother found years ago you should go to a barber and get a bag of human hair. If you stuff the hair into the tracks that the moles use to travel through your yard, they will be gone in less than a week. It works every time.

I WANT TO THANK Melissa and the Church of the Nazarene for the Thanksgiving dinner they brought to St. John Towers. That was the best carrot and coconut cake I have ever had.

EVERYONE SHOULD write to the National Football League and let them know that Ray Guy, from Thomson, should be in the hall of fame. He deserves to be in there.

I am not sure who the writer

I am not sure who the writer was-- but the topic had to do with Section 8 recipients and how they degrade the surrounding communities. As a former recipient of a section 8 housing voucher, I find your comments insulting. I was only given a matter of weeks to find a landlord willing to accept the voucher for me and my children after waiting for 3 years for my name to 'come to the top of the list' I tried repeatedly to find a landlord in a safer part of town with better schools who would accept the $585.00 voucher for rent on a 3 bedroom home. Since you have experience with rentals in the now extremely depressed and dangerous area of town you mentioned, I am sure you know that there was no way I would find a landlord willing to accept such a small amount for rent. I was not allowed to pay the difference between my voucher and the asking rent for a house. I am thankful that I did find a landlord with a doublewide trailer in the Hephzibah area who would reduce the required rent and allow my children and I to move in. And before you go shouting about entitlement-- I was equally thankful that the Section 8 program existed in the first place to allow some hope of a home for me and my children who were living in temporary housing provided by Augusta Urban Ministries. We became homeless by leaving an abusive situation. And I have worked my tail off to keep a roof over their heads and clothes on their backs. Section 8 recipients receive a map of the area when they get their voucher. The map highlights the most depressed areas of town with the highest crime rates and we are strongly advised to find housing ELSEWHERE! in hopes that the children in the home will learn how to be good citizens by the example around them.... unfortunately, because (slum)landlords who dont care too much about keeping up their properties because they live elsewhere allow their tenants (whether section 8 or not)to live in such a way that lowers the quality of the neighborhoods, thus lowering rent rates, people like me are forced to move into undesirable neighborhoods and must try diligently to raise our children to a higher moral and ethical standard even though they are surrounded by filth and degradation. Section 8 has nothing to do with it. Humans sink below or rise above. A helping hand up would certainly help some of us, but too many are driven solely by the love of money-- guaranteed to flow in in vast monthly installments to those 'property investors' who keep their properties just barely over the sub-standard that section 8 requires them to maintain.

I have a total of five

I have a total of five updates to share with the public..

1. Several properties around the Kroger shopping center have been purchased by GHSU over the last few years.. GHSU owns the Kroger plaza along 15th street and the lease is up at the end of 2011... What should GHSU do with this prime piece of real estate?? If GHSU can renovate the Kroger shopping center, get the dorms on the old Fatman property to start construction, break ground on the Medical Educational Commons facility, and have a research/biotech park underway before 2014/2015, then Dr. Azziz would have the ''cool campus setting'' he's desparately seeking.. Instead of a bunch of GHSU buildings in the Medical District with no unified atmosphere.. The situation reminds of the Augusta National kicking out Food Lion in the shopping center on Washington rd last year..
2. A 14,400 sq. ft. office/retail building is coming to 3827 Wrightsboro Rd(near Sue Reynolds elementary school)
http://appweb.augustaga.gov/planning_zoning/plazid_display.asp?zID=4265
3. The Paine College campus is moving along with another major project.. This comes after a $1 million renovation to Haygood Hall and receiving millions of grant money. The $14 million 80k sq. ft. HEAL facility aka Health and Learning Complex is underway on Druid Park.. New classrooms, research labs, weight room, meeting and conference rooms, olympic size swimming pool, walking track, health and wellness facility, and a 2,400 seat arena.. On my way to the Medical District earlier this week.. I noticed their was construction along Central Avenue between 15th street and Druid Park.. Anybody know what Paine is planning on doing here??

4. The Augusta Exchange area

4. The Augusta Exchange area of West Augusta continues to grow extremely fast.. Bar west is open, Buffalo Wild Wings opened a few months ago, the expanded Tutti Frutti should be completed, Ulta is underway in the former Borders space, the 124 Residence Inn(Marriott) coming to 1110 Marks Church rd, and the Hilton brand hotel is opening at 3634 Walton Way Extension.. Now a 7,425k sq. ft. center will be constructed at 3670 Wheeler rd(near Knology).. I've heard Dunkin Donuts is going to be apart of the future development..
http://appweb.augustaga.gov/planning_zoning/plazid_display.asp?zID=4277
5. The 10k sq. ft. Shoppes at Dyess Park(off Madeline Drive/Harper Franklin) was approved on October 27th, 2011.. Dyess Park(btw Harper Franklin and Belair rd except one lot) includes the existing Zaxbys, Freedom Park Executive Center, Child's World, and future development... The new housing underway throughout Elderberry, Granite Hill, Aylesbury Commons, Willhaven, etc is one of the reasons.. Along with the ground breaking of the Haynes Station(200 acres) and Mccoys Creek(62 acres residential/1 acre commercial) subdivisions for the new commercial growth.. Southwest Augusta aka SWAG(Belair rd, Jimmie Dyess, and Gordon Hwy between Jimmie Dyess/Grovetown) continues to grow extremely fast.. A new elementary school and middle will have to be built soon. The future 25 acre shopping center is located between Harper Franklin and Gordon Hwy along Jimmie Dyess Pkwy.

How about for the city to

How about for the city to save some money they give up Pendleton King Park. This park does not belong to the city yet the Maintenance and upkeep, electricity to the park, water, and utilities for the caretakers house (electric, gas, phone, water) are all paid for by the city.

Also do away with the trailer at the new locks. Put a guard shack up for one person to sit in, hire security to man the shack, why are we paying employees a regular salary and then compensating them with a place to live. How many more employees are we housing with out taxes (not the ones being arrested)?

NOT COLDHEARTED, but why are city employees that are on the clock allowed to use city vehicles to attend funerals and not required to take leave to attend? I can see figure heads doing so but at least carpool. If anyone else wants to attend then that it fine but they must use their leave time for the time not actually at work working. We are trying to save now right?

A HUGE RANT to Columbia

A HUGE RANT to Columbia County for not flying it's flags at the courthouse and other governmental building at half-mast yesterday. Upon inquiring with the courthouse guard of why they were at full mast, I was told that they received no instruction to lower them. Even the McDonalds on Columbia Rd lowered its flag in honor and memory of those who lost their lives at Pearl Harbor. Shame on you Columbia County ---your pride is getting in the way of showing what 'good citizens' you have in high places. Even as a working poor, former section 8 , food stamp receiving mom without help from my babydaddies, I know flag flying etiquette -- and how lucky I am to be a citizen of a country that men fight and die to protect. Why did you not honor those men???

Again this week a real estate

Again this week a real estate property mgr. told me the only realiable help he can get lately are the non-Americans....now that makes a roofer foreman--real estate mgr,--2 contractors (of building)...saying that..
I have seen the work of some & know the quality is there....
so are they lying when they say we have LAZY Americans ---can't depend on them to show up??

I paid dearly for ceiling work from a Georgia born/bred & the work was not completed in 3 visits ...said he couldn't get popcorn ceiling to stick...the realestate guy got his "guy" to finish it in 1 visit..& it looks great....
If this keeps up we are doomed because the only workers wanted willbe YOU-KNOW-WHO......
The same thing with stone steps .....2 edge sword....real estate pros use them all the time & the reasons are not always money...
We have lost something in the USA..(all colors-all class of people)
we don't strive for quality & don't appreciate a job like in the past...
