Downtown streets to close for parade

Today is The Augusta Chronicle’s Christmas Light-Up Spectacular, an all-day event downtown that includes a parade, vendors and music.

Broad Street’s westbound lanes will be closed from 13th Street to 15th Street starting at 9 a.m. for parade staging, according to Richmond County sheriff’s Sgt. Raul Fernandez.

At 2 p.m., Broad Street’s westbound lanes from 15th Street to Sixth Street will close.

The parade will turn right at Sixth Street and end at the Augusta-Richmond County Municipal Building on Greene Street. The parade will begin at 3 p.m., and the streets will stay closed until the roads are cleared.

Fernandez said the eastbound lanes of Broad Street will stay open all day, in addition to the side streets, including Greene, Jones, Ellis and Reynolds streets. The parking in the middle of Broad also will be available all day.

The busiest part of Broad tends to be between Seventh and Ninth streets, Fernandez said, so he recommends standing between 10th and 13th streets for the best view.

In addition to the Christmas parade, Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver will turn on the downtown holiday lights tonight, and a fireworks display will follow.
