Jesse Jackson, Occupy Atlanta take over bank lobby for hour

ATLANTA — The Rev. Jesse Jackson and a group of Occupy Atlanta protesters took over the lobby of SunTrust Plaza in downtown Atlanta for about an hour Friday afternoon as workers left for the day.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson (center rear) exits SunTrust Bank's headquarters after taking over the lobby with Occupy Atlanta protesters. Jackson joined protesters who entered the lobby near closing time Friday to protest economic conditions and foreclosure rates across the country.

The building was shut down as the protesters sang songs and prayed inside the Atlanta-based bank’s headquarters.

Jackson, in town for a conference with his Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, said he was there to protest economic conditions and foreclosure rates across the country.

The protest came a day after Jackson met with Occupy Atlanta demonstrators to encourage them to focus on financial institutions rather than arguing with City Hall.

“The issue is not the mayor – it’s the banking community. It’s the insurance community. It’s the investment community,” Jackson said Friday after the protest at SunTrust. “The few are getting wealthier and wealthier while the people are suffering more and more.”

Jackson has visited with protesters in other cities around the country, including in New York, Chicago and Detroit. He has called the Occupy movement “a gallant stand for social justice for all people” that represents the growing disparity between the haves and the have-nots.

For weeks, the Occupy Atlanta movement was based at Woodruff Park in downtown before police arrested more than 50 people Oct. 25 after Mayor Kasim Reed revoked an executive order that had allowed the protesters to remain in the park overnight. Authorities have since been enforcing the 11 p.m. curfew for public parks, and the protesters have not been allowed to sleep there.

Occupy Atlanta organizer Tim Franzen said the movement is “fluid” and will not be focused in one place.

“This is a liquid movement. We’re all over the city,” said Franzen, wearing an Oakland A’s jacket. “We’re not going to be handcuffed to a hunk of dirt. It’s not about a hunk of dirt. It’s about a statement.”

He said he’s been working to train protesters in nonviolent techniques to avoid the tense clashes with police that have been seen in Oakland, Calif.

The group plans to have more training with officials from the King Center today, he said.

Occupy Atlanta organizers say they plan to gather in Woodruff Park – which they renamed for Troy Davis, the Georgia prisoner executed last month for the shooting death of a police officer – today and are prepared to be arrested again.

A nearby homeless shelter has become their headquarters.

Jackson said the effort reminds him of the Poor People’s Campaign that the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was just beginning before he was killed in April 1968.

Anyone who compares the

Anyone who compares the occupiers to the Civil Rights activists got a hold of some bad weed.

Mentioning Dr. King in the same sentence as the occupiers is like comparing Beethoven and Lady Gaga.

MINATL! AUGUSTA

MINATL! AUGUSTA CITIZEN!!!

Good, I am glad I have both of your attentions now. Yes, these are important issues, but nothing good will come of having the REV Jesse Jackson turning this whole thing into some far fetched race issue.

As for Augusta Citizen, I have seen your liberal blogs before, just as you have seen my conservative blogs, or is your memory ever fading?

You kinda win bclicious.

You kinda win bclicious. jessie jackson is drawing straws. He is yesterdays news and holds no water. He hasn't done anything respectable since freeing those hostages. Most communities are starting to think for themselves instead of letting people tell them what to do. jessie hasn't cut one check to his supporters but has cashed all of them from supporters. So saying have that, you might have got an easy win.

Are you freaking kidding me -

Are you freaking kidding me - they re-named a park for a person who killed a police officer? Seriously? This is insane.

These so called 99% are really more like the 1%. They have no message other than effecting businesses who are employing people and therefore are hurting workers, costing the government more money, etc....they are not part of any solution but are a major part of the problem.

I have no problem with civil protest but not occupation, taking over of private property where people are working, conducting business, outright breaking of our laws, etc. to do so as most of these persons are now doing and even being told to do by "leaders" such as Jackson, unions, etc.

You can make your point and protest in many legal ways without negatively effecting others - Heck, I even agree with many of the points discussed such as the bail outs using government funds, etc. - Ford didn't take them like GM did and they are doing just fine. As for the other businesses, if they can't make it on their own, let them fail, there will still be plenty of businesses around. And, of course, go after all of the corporate leaders who stole, liked, etc. but to "occupy" areas, cause caos, stop the flow of traffic, business, etc. is ridiculous, unlawful, disorderly and shows total lack of respect for many.

The sleep in their corporate made tents while drinking their corporate coca cola's, etc. and a large portion of them are living off of mommy and daddy except of course for the many that have been infused by the unions, etc. - this whole "movement" is a joke and not worthy of any additional news coverage.

As for Jessee Jackson, he shows up anytime he can make a name for himself and could care less about the disenfranchised, etc. -- if he cares so much, he can donate more of his money to the federal government who does a terrible job of distributing funds....over 100 current investigations in the last distribution of stimulus funds....what a joke. And, my comments are not towards either party because I wouldn't trust Bush with any more of our money any more than I would trust Obama.

bclicious, you are obviously

bclicious, you are obviously confusing me with someone else. I can assure you that you have never read anything liberal from me at all!!Quite the opposite and I was being sarcastic to MINATL for registering to comment on this story, wondering if it's one of those paid posters popping up to push the agenda for the OWS bunch. New posters are coming out of the woodwork to push the liberal agenda, it's happening more and more.

Jane18, it is a shame and a disgrace that they would have re-named the park in honor of a cop-killer, our country is allowing some insane things to be done.

Jesse Jackson will go anywhere and say anything for attention and to stir up conflict, he's always been that way.

FalseHopeLooseChange, I like your flushing analogy!! Kind of like "Change You Can Step In".

Somebody was saying a while

Somebody was saying a while back that conservatives were out of line using the word socialists to described liberal protestors. But what other word is appropriate? The avowed goal of the liberals is wealth redistribution.

Ever see how people escape countries by the thousands when a socialist government comes to power? They know what happens to THEIR possessions.

Since the raid in Columbia

Since the raid in Columbia County took away some of the people willing to work maybe some of the OWS crowd would like a job. But I bet they would turn it down. They are too interested in a redistribution of what others earn. Let them keep on protesting but don't pay any attention to the losers and those that work keep holding your head high and proud. You do not owe them anything. And also discount anything that the so called rev jessie jackson has to say.

Jesse Jackson has no

Jesse Jackson has no credibility, he’s just one of the Democratic operatives that want to co-opt OWS and morph it into their 2012 turn-out-the-vote effort like the Republicans did with the Tea Party in 2010.

I think the Democrats have

I think the Democrats have taken on more than they know. This movement is out of control and could possible do much more harm than good.
Citizens of this country don't want to be blocked from their place of business or have to close because customers can't or won't get through the bodies (would you want to?).
