MYRTLE BEACH — Former Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer has his eyes set on Congress as he seeks the GOP nomination in South Carolina’s new 7th Congressional District.
Bauer has filed a statement of candidacy and formed an Andre Bauer for Congress committee listing his address as Myrtle Beach.
Bauer was defeated last year in his quest for the GOP nomination for governor. He says he’s been making phone calls to see if there is support for a congressional run and things look positive. He has not yet announced formally.
The new district was created in the northeastern corner of the state after the census showed population gains.
Republicans Thad Viers, Mande Wilkes and Gary Stephens have already announced.
Democrat Parnell Diggs is also running.
9 held in sales of untaxed cigarettes
MAULDIN — Federal authorities have broken a ring of conspirators they say illegally purchased and sold untaxed cigarettes totaling millions of dollars.
Prosecutors say agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives rounded up several men in northwestern South Carolina this week.
Prosecutors say the nine suspects acquired untaxed cigarettes in Virginia and took them to South Carolina for distribution.
Authorities have been investigating the ring for three years. In that time, they say the suspects paid undercover officers about $20 million for untaxed cigarettes.
They face charges ranging from conspiracy to traffic in contraband cigarettes, money laundering and sale of stolen goods.
