Firefighters battle a blaze at Pollard Lumber Co. in Appling. Owner Andy Pollard said about a day's worth of production was destroyed.

Nearly 25 Martinez-Columbia Fire Rescue firefighters battled flames pouring from the dry kiln of the sawmill on Washington Road near Pollard’s Corner.

The fire, which was reported about 10:15 a.m., was contained by firefighters before it could spread to other areas of the lumberyard, fire department Battalion Chief Dino Cesarini said.

About a day’s worth of production was ruined in the fire, lumberyard owner Andy Pollard said.

No one was injured in the blaze.

“That’s always the main thing,” Pollard said.

Kiln fires happen about every 10 to 20 years and are almost always caught before causing damage, he said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and it could take some time before it’s determined, Cesarini said.

Many people working on the property stopped to watch crews fighting to extinguish the blaze.
