A Waynesboro police officer was accidentally shot by a Burke County sheriff’s deputy on Friday when the two arrived at a home where they had a search warrant, according to a statement by Waynesboro Police Chief Alfonzo Williams.

Officer Daniel Windham was shot in the elbow when the deputy mistakenly discharged his shotgun at the house on the 800 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd at 8:04 p.m. Windham was transported to Medical College of Georgia Hospital for evaluation.

The deputy, whose name will not be released during the investigation, was suspended with pay.

The warrant was in response to illegal alcohol sales at the house of Tony Mims, 33. He has been charged with possessing or selling and distributing alcoholic beverages.
