Augustan survives first round of 'The Sing-Off'

  • Follow Metro

Augusta native Jamal Moore and his group, the YellowJackets, survived the first round of The Sing-Off Monday night.

They were first to perform on the season premiere. They sang Wavin' Flag by K'naan.

The graduate of Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School is currently a student at Eastman School of Music, which is part of the University of Rochester in Rochester, N.Y. The YellowJackets, based at the university, are a male group that performs a capella, said Moore's mother, Barbara Allen Bush.

Hosted by multiplatinum recording artist Nick Lachey, The Sing-Off features 16 of the country's best a capella groups performing popular songs. The groups compete for America's vote, and the winner receives a Sony Music recording contract and $100,000, according to the show's Web site. Two of the groups were eliminated Monday night. The show airs on Mondays at 8 p.m. on WAGT-TV 26 (NBC).

Locally, Moore also received voice instruction from Patti Myers, a professor at Augusta State University.

YES - much can be

YES - much can be accomplished if one tries and puts his/her heart into it. Congratulations - and much success in the future. Proud to know that an Augustan can also move on in this world.

Just got home from work, but

Just got home from work, but fortunately, I was able to see Jamal perform on the "Sing Off" with the rest of the group. I wasn't surprised to see he had one of the solos in the song, too. I am thrilled he had the opportunity to visit Kenya with his group and is competing in this venue. He has earned that spot. From what I saw of his many and varied performances (drama, singing, etc.) he's MORE than a triple threat in the Performing Arts. I wish him all the best!

I hadn't even heard of this

I hadn't even heard of this show before this year. May keep watching it, but it will have to pick up. The Yellowjackets were one of the best groups though (just a coincidence between my choice and my team's name). Good luck Jamal.

Congrats to this young

Congrats to this young man.....I think this is a great positive story and I wish this young man luck and continued success. Just goes to show that all things are possible if you have the drive and determination to make it happen....alot of other young people could learn from his example.

It's actually a great show if

It's actually a great show if you enjoy a capella music as we do at our house. I wasn't too keen on some of the judges last time-didn't find one of them too "expert" in the field-and haven't seen it this season yet but look forward to seeing a local talent! Wishing his group the best!
