Wayne Eggins Jr. and Monique Sullivan-Johnson admire their newborn, Wayne Marshall Eggins III.

Wayne Eggins finally got a good experience at a hospital two weeks ago with the arrival of his son, Wayne Marshall Eggins III.

The healthy 7-pound, 2-ounce baby boy was delivered in the wee morning hours of Sept. 5 by Eggins’ fiancee, Monique Sullivan-Johnson. They were home the next day.

“I was uncomfortable and ready to get home,” she said. “I know Wayne was, too, because those couches are uncomfortable.”

Sullivan-Johnson had her own hospital vigil in February after Eggins was shot in the head while trying to stop a burglary. He’s emerged from the near-death experience with strength and determination. The pending arrival of his son was a source of inspiration for him.

It felt good to hold my son, he said.

The immediate future is unclear for the couple. Eggins has several major surgeries ahead to repair his skull and his jaw. He’s come a long way through rehabilitation and is experimenting with walking without a cane.

Sullivan-Johnson said they will make decisions about their next move as they arrive.

“We’ll be all right,” she said.
