Rants & Raves

Comments from our readers:

Headline: (Augusta Regional Airport) "Runway to close for upgrade." $14,000,000 for maybe one mile of paving, a few lights and a few new signs? That's $2,600 per FOOT for paving. Take away lights and signs and call it $2,000 per FOOT! ($166 per INCH!) Have politicians already produced the streets of gold?

N.Y. Sen. Charles Schumer was on TV worried about New York City bus schedules. Are local buses any business of federal office holders? No way! Every day these D.C. guys poke their noses further into our business.

A rant for Judge Flanagan for releasing Amber Rose Lever and stating that she "put herself in jail ... because she did not listen." Actually, she put herself in jail by breaking the law, not once, but twice within a six-month time frame. Obviously, her punishment less than six months ago -- probation, license suspension, community service and a fine - had no impact on this young lady. I am not sure why the same type of punishment -- serving on probation and community service by speaking to schools, churches and other groups - will work this time.

Obama spokesman Jay Carney says the U.S. government must not "lose borrowing authority." That's exactly backwards. The U.S. government MUST lose ALL authority to borrow.

This is a rave for the Richmond County mosquito control. I have had to call them twice recently regarding the huge outbreak of mosquitoes this year. They have responded to my calls within 24 hours each time and Mr. Bobby Kitchens has come out and sprayed my property. I cannot stress how much I appreciate the excellent service!

This is a rant to our commissioners. Augusta Chronicle needs to do an investigation on how many studies these commissioners bought over the last 10 years and did not listen to the advice of the study. And now they're talking about another one when our city is in a shortfall. Please, somebody do something.

Our politicians in Washington need to quit playing chicken, trying to see which party's going to blink first. Get down to the real work that you were sent there for. This is not a game.

Why aren't the taxpayers of Columbia County screaming about the property tax increase? The commission gave you 12.50 and the school board took 25.

The government should withhold all money from MCG, if they are giving free service to illegal immigrants. What a slap-in-the-face to the legal immigrants.

I regret voting for the Republicans!

Can anyone please tell me why the security guards on Fort Gordon don't have ceiling fans like most military? I think some of their supervisors should stand with their officers on the 100-plus days. I see them fighting gnats and flies and mosquitoes. Unless the wind is blowing they have no airflow. I hope the post commander reads this.

The $14 million(runway

The $14 million(runway project) FAA grant is key to the continued success of the airport... The funds were the largest grant ever given to the local airport.. AGS is one of the fastest growing airports in the entire US(first class service, restaurant/bar, coffee shop, gift shop, valet parking).. American Eagle started flying out of AGS(June/2010) and Delta added mainline(May/2011) flights due to the impressive growth rate.. Augusta Regional grew at 24% in 2010 and set a passenger record last year.. AGS became the 165th busiest airport in 2010 after moving up a total of ten spots and thirty-nine since the year 2006... The airport growth rate was 21% at the end of May 2011... The parking lot expansion is underway the FBO Terminals starts in the near future.. If companies continue to invest into Augusta similar to FPL foods based here in the city.. The company recently opened another location off Laney Walker($3 million) and they're creating 100 new jobs.. The airport will grow even faster in the future compared to now.. Sooner or later the airport officials will be announcing the non-stop flights to both DC and New York..

No matter what you wish to

No matter what you wish to call a 14 MILLION DOLLAR upgrade to the Augusta Airport, it is ridiculous to spend that much on a runway. Based on current use, that is like the Feds paying $1,000.00 per passenger flying in/out per year for a few years. It may be good for Augusta but it is PORK spending from the Feds and we all must do our part to stop the madness in cases such as this.

Having the airport is great, and if it can make it on its own based on fees, then go for it. If not, then Columbia is better and is an hour away and Atlanta is only 2.5 hours. Don't get me wrong, I do like the airport, think it is nice, etc. but it is NOT a necessity from tax payer funds and the millions that have already been spent combined with this new spending is absolutely ridicuolus.

Additionally, Delta just said they are looking at ALL airports where cuts can be made in flight service or cancelled all together if there are airports nearby...don't be suprised if Augusta is on that list except one week a year.

The wasted studies this commission has done over the years is a joke. The money went down the drain and no one listened to anything anyway. The only reason a study is done is that they hope to use it to reinforce what they already would like to do or not have done so if it fits their agenda then they listen and if it doesn't they don't but either way they do what they were going to do so stop the madness with the studies.

If the Fort Gordon Security Guards are having to deal with this heat combined with mosquitoes, ect. and fans are all that are needed to help solve this problem then someone please get on this immediatley.

Judge Flanigan made the right decision for the girl, her family, the family of the victim (who also requested the release) and for the tax payers. She can do more good in community service then behind bars.

Columbia County Taxpayers are

Columbia County Taxpayers are complaining on the Columbia County Taxpayers Council and the Columbia County Conservative Viewpoint websites and on facebook. The local media and talk radio will not cover unrest in Columbia County for some reason.

I agree with the last rant,

I agree with the last rant, anything we can do to help our gate guards should be done. But please note, our previous Garrison Commander, COL Kennedy, did stints standing out there checking IDs along with the gate guards! He was the kind of leader that wanted to experience first hand what his soldiers and civilians did everyday. COL Barker is a great soldier, but he has a tough act to follow!

Delta added mainline flights

Delta added mainline flights in May of 2011... Most small and medium markets are losing and not gaining mainline flights.. I don't expect Delta to cut anything at AGS..

countyman - your knowledge

countyman - your knowledge seems to be never ending, no matter what subject may come up. Do you have some magic book? I am really amazed - one only needs to read your comments and is fully informed.

As for the subject of 'studies' the Augusta/Richmond County government had have done over the years and is still doing, if they were 'wise men' they would use their brains and do the studying themselves and save us taxpayers a whole bunch of money. But, there is always someone laughing on the way to the bank, and none of them are taxpayers.

TrulyWorried, you would do

TrulyWorried, you would do well to pay attention to Riverman. I have never found him to be inaccurate, and I've been around these blogs for a long time! However, if he does make a mistake, he admits it!

Could someone please read

Could someone please read this to the aging guy in the mall in khaki cargo shorts, Lynyrd Skynyrd tee wearing black socks with his flipflops this afternoon carrying a 1911 clone in an unzipped fanny pack: It's called 'concealed carry' for a reason. C'mon, someone out there knows who this is. . .
