Comments from our readers:

A NATIONWIDE charter-schools study found that nearly half of charter schools in Detroit do as well as the local public school; more than a third did worse and just 17 percent did better. Atlanta says 46 out of 55 cheater schools do better than charter schools who don't cheat. Maybe you just can't put lipstick on a pig.

E-15 (15 PERCENT ETHANOL) has been determined by the EPA to be OK for "late model cars and light trucks." Marinas and small engine repair folks say E-10 (10 percent ethanol) is harmful to boat engines and small engines. Who to believe: the government or local repair people?

HEADLINE: "GOP CONGRESSMAN: 'Impeachable offense' if Obama bypasses Congress on debt ceiling." Amen! Rep. Tim Scott is standing tall. Obama should have been impeached months back.

BEFORE MAGGIE DOUGLAS, the Bellevue Avenue mom, found herself in a situation that she thinks warrants the inane idea of a four-way stop on Highland Avenue, which is already loaded with traffic lights, perhaps she should have either taught her little one about crossing a busy street in traffic, walked with him herself or picked him up in the car and driven him home.

WHO WERE THE geniuses that established the Rae's Creek canal spillway park near the spillway? Now due to vandalism, misconduct and abuse of that area the whole canal road to the pumping station is closed off to public recreational use. Tell the group responsible ... my two porties are upset they can't get to their favorite water hole in this intense heat wave.

LESS BUSINESS for the mall and downtown Augusta is great for the competition ... especially if you profit from Surrey Center. Thugs will be taking over Surrey soon if Deke does not accept his responsibility to enforce Augusta's nuisance ordinance: Article 1 sec 7-2-2 (Notice the wording ... "acts" and "behavior").

HERE WE GO AGAIN, pay for all wages, expenses, repairs, equipment plus $5,000 per month and still don't make a profit for years! All they manage to do is eliminate six city workers from benefits and all is needed is to raise the green fees to modern-day prices, or close The Patch. What a bunch of fools we have in commissioners.

IF ANYONE wants to know how to get the city's golf course operating in the black within 24 hours, it's simple. I know that it would upset a lot of good ol' boys, but all you have to do is charge everyone who plays green fees.

Highland Avenue - from

Highland Avenue - from Wrightsboro Road to Walton Way is barely 3/4 of a mile long. It is a nice quiet residential street (except for the cars). With all those old trees the shades change at various times during the day and sometimes makes seeing rather difficult. People with sense slow down automatically - 35 mph is the speed, why not try 25 or 30 (on your own). And as for the two times during school days - why not have parents take turns and slow down traffic? I am sure the Board of Education could let them have an extra stop sign, unless that would be against the law - and that would be sad.

The rants in this paper

The rants in this paper calling for Obama's impeachment are ridiculous. You may not agree with him politically but that's no reason to call for impeachment at all. Some of you really have no idea how our system is supposed to work.

I don't get the rant about

I don't get the rant about the canal. All you you have to do is park at the lot at the end of lake olmstead and walk 200 yards across the pedestrian bridge to the spillway. Now people can't drive back there and dump all their trash like they've done in the past.

The Tall Man... Obama can do

The Tall Man... Obama can do nothing right in their eyes, so I let those negative comments go in one ear and out the other. It's much healthier. they have their thoughts and I have mine, and we are not going to change each other. They whine and groan, and I relax and enjoy life.

It is absolutely STUPID for the city to close the canal access road. I don't go there often but still like taking my dog for a ride down the dirt road. He gets out of the house and gets to play in the water for a bit...

Just a thought...small

Just a thought...small engines such as what would be found in lawn mowers, go carts etc and boat/car engines are made quite differently and therefore what is good for one might not be good for the other. The ranter is kind of comparing apples to oranges....just like we put oil in our weed whacker gas but not the lawn mower. Its bad for the mower but good for the weed whacker.

I don't understand how the

I don't understand how the Augusta mall or downtown is losing business when new things continue to open.. Twelve new stores and restaurants have opened at the mall since the start of 2010.. Another store is opening in the old Spencer's and the Bath and Body Works renovations is complete.. Both Champs and Aeropostale are undergoing renovations at the mall.

Sprint Food & Metro Market(restaurant and gas station) is opening at the former Belk building location next to the Augusta common.. Thirty-four condos and the Trantra Lounge are under construction in the Whites Building.. Soy Noodle House is expanding next door and Faulk building is under contract... The Lofts at Marbury( 42 lofts and 10 townhomes: three new buildings) start construction later this year..

Deke continues to deliver new

Deke continues to deliver new industry, companies, retail, residential, etc to Richmond County.. Check out the population growth in Richmond County since 2006.. The mayor won the election at the end of the year 2005. I do give credit to the Development Authority, DDA(Saturday Market & CADI), Historic Augusta, etc for their hard work too..

Richmond County is leading the CSRA in the number of new commercial permits in 2011.. Drive around and view the Village at Riverwatch, Cherry street shopping center, Buffalo Wild Wings, etc construction.. The 25 acre shopping center, Flowing Wells Business Park, and Shops at Dyess Park start construction later in the year.. The Carmax area and Highland Ridge both will add new buildings in the future. The city of Augusta ranked 9th(mid-size metros) in terms of corporate expansions in the year 2010.. AGS is one of the fastest growing airports in the entire US..

How many mid-size cities in the US continue to attract the industry Augusta does??? It's only July 2011 and we've already had several huge investments throughout the county.. Augusta Newsprint $55 million, Bennett International $35 million-15 jobs, and Potash/PCS Nitrogen $40 million, Algae facility intial investment $10 million-200 jobs, and Electrolux $2.5 million-over 300 jobs...

The usual suspects bashed the development authority for visiting Germany in order to attract new companies.. During the trip to Germany the authority visited the Netherlands and got a chance to meet with the CEO and CFO of DSM.. Guess what?? Last week DSM announced they've purchase the 40 acre former Pfizer plant located in East Augusta.

So the trip to Germany

So the trip to Germany Sprouse and his crew made resulted in DSM buying the old Pfizer plant? Hilarious. You don't think the DSM people right here didn't have anything to do with it? They have plants all over. They have one in SC. I believe you can talk to the people who make decisions right here in the U.S.

I do believe if that's the justification for Sprouse's Germany trip, that's a stretch. But I haven't seen anything else resulting from that trip.

When the story of Sprouse and

When the story of Sprouse and Co. trip to Germany ran a big deal was made that they covered 2,200 miles in 5 days in Germany. They claimed they were rushed. Nothing was mentioned of going to Holland, but now Countyman says they went there, too. Interesting.

I think all ethanol should be

I think all ethanol should be taken out of all gasoline. My car runs better and gets way better gas mileage on nonethanol. I pay a little more per gallon but it lasts a lot longer so I'm still coming out ahead. Only place I know that sells it is Gregs Gas Plus in SC, there is probably more out there.

The Algae facility was an joint venture between Algae Bioenergy Solutions LLC and Bard Holding... The proprety takes up 100 acres and the building is 200k square feet...

The corporate headquarters of DSM Chemcials are located in the Netherlands.. The authority got the chance to discuss other projects with DSM too.. In the future new companies will be calling Richmond County home.

Countyman, that's interesting

Countyman, that's interesting that they went to Holland. It had been claimed on the other story that they traveled through Germany 2,200 miles jammed in a minivan in 5-6 days. Now we learn they went to Holland.

Emergencyfan, really? Heh.

Emergencyfan, really? Heh. But the point is they laid out the trip as only visiting Germany and being hard pressed driving the 2,200 miles in 5-6 days. Now Countyman implies they had some type of conference with DSM officials that resulted in DSM buying the old Pfizer plant. Hardly.

This has little to do with the subject, but I used to have ALL my money in stock in a company called Martek. When Pfizer closed, I emailed them and suggested they buy the place. Well, Martek was bought out by DSM and now DSM is buying the Pfizer place. Interesting turn of events.
