The crash occurred about 9 p.m. when a southbound 2006 Ford Explorer ran a stop sign on Ridge Road and was hit broadside by a 1992 Jeep Cherokee traveling east on Washington Road.
Morgan Renew, 18, a Barnwell, S.C., native who was studying nursing at the University of South Carolina Beaufort, was riding in the back seat of the Ford Explorer and was partially ejected when the vehicle overturned.
Renew died shortly after being taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital, said the Columbia County coroner, Vernon Collins.
Services for Renew, a 2010 graduate of Barnwell High School, were held Monday evening at Barnwell First Baptist Church.
Also injured in the crash was the driver of the Explorer, Kristine Heath, 35, of the 2200 block of Dartmouth Court in Augusta, along with five other passengers. Two of them remained hospitalized Monday, according to MCG's media relations manager, Denise Parrish: Jamie Whitehead, 33, of Warrenville, was listed in serious condition; and Brian Whitehead, 31, was listed in good condition.
Three of the six occupants of the Jeep remained hospitalized Monday: driver Angel Herrin, 34, of the 700 block of Bennock Mill Road in Augusta, who was listed in fair condition; Marshall Herrin, 36, of the same address, in critical condition; and Brittany Herrin, 9, in serious condition, Parrish said.
Of the 13 occupants of the two SUVs, just two in each vehicle -- both drivers -- were wearing seat belts, said Columbia County sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris.
Charges in the crash are pending and could take two to three weeks before being filed, Morris said.
