Rants and Raves

Comments from readers:

THIS IS A RANT to Oscar Sims, the commander of American Legion Post 178 on the front page of Tuesday's Augusta Chronicle . Of all people, Mr. Sims, don't you know better than to wear our United States flag as a shirt? You know better. Shame on you.

I HAVE A RANT because the restaurant owner, where the young fellow was killed by the policeman, did not call a church or the Salvation Army or somewhere. If he ate nothing but peanuts and water for two weeks, why didn't he call somebody to help? Because the police sure didn't help.

THERE HAS BEEN a horrible fecal stench out here in south Augusta over the past week. I have called everyone I can think of, and still nothing has been done and no one seems to know what I am talking about. We are tired of being the dumping ground out here. No one should have to put up with this kind of stench. It is unbearable.

MY RANT IS to the city of Augusta. When I called to report a strong sewage smell off Windsor Spring Road, I was told that I should just "get used to it" because south Augusta has always smelled bad. What kind of answer is that? No one should have to get used to this. It is nauseating to go outside or open the window, and if there is a sewage leak, the city should be more concerned about it.

THIS IS A BIG rave for the Harrisburgers, and especially Lori Davis and Butch Palmer, who organized the Harrisburg Mill Village reception at The Ezekiel Harris House the other day. What a fantastic event and turnout, and the new Harrisburg logo looks great. I am so excited about all of the positive things happening in the 'Burg.

THIS IS A RANT ... if people want to ride bicycles on the highway, let them buy insurance, tags, get a special license, have turn signals, brake lights ... then they could ride on the interstate highway. Wouldn't that be great? Oh yes, and be subject to fines for running stop signs and red lights and not using turn signals.

THIS IS BIG RANT for the Augusta Convention and Visitors Bureau for promoting the sinful gay parade in a recent article in The Chronicle . The CVB also left south Augusta out of its restaurants listings on its recent brochure. But then, those of us on the south side are used to being snubbed. None of our tax dollars should go toward promoting the homosexual lifestyle, period.

So now it is the

So now it is the responsibility of restauant owners barely making eough to be in business to call homeless shelters when freeloaders enter to eat for free, bother patrons and turn the restrooms into their own personal home? Amazing how ridiculous some people can be.

People need to take Persoanl Responsibility and Acountibility for their actions serious again if we are going to succeed as a country.

It isn't the fault of the parents for not making a child better or the school system for not teaching them more or society for holding them back or the police for doing their jobs, etc. it is the responsibility of every person to learn to be responsibility and acountibility. In America, anyone can be successful if they try instead of relying on the government to take care of them or blaming others for their problems.

We need a naked gay bicycle

We need a naked gay bicycle parade with free peanuts in South Augusta. That way no one will notice the stench.

Don't be surprised. That is the general view of South Richmond County residents. They think we are so stupid we can't tell the difference between the smell of the paper plant and the smell of sh........err, fecal matter. Just like they think we are so stupid we can't tell that we receive no benefit for our tax dollars, that we are totally ignored in all matters of development and investment, and that we are overtaxed and under represented under this "downtown" government. Might as well secede and form your own government South Richmond County. You are never going to get anything from the "downtown clowns". They don't care if all of South Richmond County turrns to sh......err fecal matter as long as you keep paying THEIR taxes.

Dichotomy, good points. Most

Dichotomy, good points. Most hotels are out in the county, yet the motel tax is being diverted to the Laney Walker area for the next 20 years. The TEE boondoggel is downtown. $100 million of COUNTY money was spent on all that. That ain't right.

I would suggest to south Augusta to make yourself known..you know who makes the decisions...they do have telephones....make it your duty-day after day to call as many as you can....every day-every week-----also fax machines.....you are getting the short end ... we know it & they know it---if that doesn't get their attention....get the news guys to follow you to their meetings....you have taken this crap for too long!

Right on again dichotomy. As

Right on again dichotomy. As a south Richmond County redneck who voted for consolidation, I will say, it was a mistake. Of course, it was never pursued as the best workable solution to the failing city/county government. Problem is we have too many democrats in Richmond County for anything to work. Democrats in the old city sucking up the Republican money paid in from West and South Augusta. South Augusta was more upscale until our give away government decided that minorities should have more self esteem than their self destructed ghettos were providing, so they took our tax monies, created upscale housing amongst us to garner more democrat votes. And then, as the rolling snow ball.

Seenit, I know it has been a

Seenit, I know it has been a while since you lived here, but I also know that you know how non functioning and full of idiocy our county government is. Maybe abolishing consolidation would be an answer. Let's have a N. Augusta, Ga. and a S.Augusta, GA. No west Augusta. Draw the lines and maybe even make it conditional, all S. Augusta will consist of Republicans. All N. Augusta will consist of democrats. Each government would necessarily collect their own taxes and have only to spend what they collected. This way would more agree with a constitutional right concerning taxation without representation.

There's another point. The big industries are located in South Augusta. They contribute far more in tax revenue than the downtown area, yet get few rewards.

You are so right again Riverman1. As an owner of 3 parcels of land, and an airplane in Richmond county, I'm sure you can imagine what disgust I feel when hey take my money and dole it out to the non productive and unworthy receipients.

The power folks in charge see

The power folks in charge see south Augusta as a secure vote.... Democrat all the way ---the very reason you folks aren't getting your money from your tax output (not you vet & a few others, Iknow we have a few Reps. there too)that is a problem.......why should they pay attention to your needs when they KNOW how you will vote!! Wake them up BIG TIME...run some independents in the next elections...
Constant calls-faxes-calls to thetv-newspaper people....no one wants to be rocked from their comfy position....you have to make them squirm to get your vote & support----put some new blood in office because what ya got now isn't working.

The reason I know calls will

The reason I know calls will get their attention is because it has worked here in Gwinnett......believe me when 100s of folks call/fax/email they NOTICE......or 1000s of people......it is your tax $$$ they are spending ...it is time they spent some in south Augusta.... you don't have to have a tea party to get action.
Also letters to the editor.

Seenit, how does ratios in

Seenit, how does ratios in Gwinnett County compare to those in richmond? Democrat/ republican. Black/white. And what is the make up of the governing bodies?. Lastly, they are not working under a government crafted by the crafty and crooked Charles Walker. We have seen how our local representatives maneuver to keep the mayor from breaking a tie. Yes, there is much afoul in
R.C. politics. And yes, I vote every election.

As a former metro Atlanta

As a former metro Atlanta resident (Cobb County), I can tell you Gwinnett County is rather affluent. The last time I looked Gwinnett had the number one school district in the state (in terms of numbers and SAT average, Cobb was number two). But the metros (Duluth, Buford, Snellville, Lawrenceville), do have higher rates of minorities. And aliens are a constant problem along Jimmy Carter Blvd. and Steve Reynolds Blvd. But not far away, schools like Brookwood, Parkview, Berkmar, are amongst the top performing in the country. So draw conclusions accordingly.

One of our commissioners was accused of taking a million dollars for land deals.....he resigned & this boondoggle caused the fall of the chairman too.....crazy politics everywhere.......we have majority white/republicans voting in this county & in the government BUT the politics will change because the ratio is changing........at one time a large % were against the Marta extending into the county & enlarging the airport but now that could change..

Patty-P, don't know if you've every been in a Five Guys restaurant but usually there is a big barrell of peanuts and you just help yourself while waiting at the table for your food. None is served so this young man more than likely just walked up and grabbed himself a handful and ate them while sitting at a table.

I remember a nation where the police picked up homeless, moneyless people and stored them overnight. Is that what we want to return to? Although it may be a better use of our police than sitting at the four way on crosscreek waiting like a lion for prey.

Patty P. InChrist is right.

Patty P. InChrist is right. You get your own peanuts and if he had his own cup, he could easily get water out of the soda machine or the bathroom. Fact is the kid was in the wrong, its not the management's responsibility to do anything other than ask him to leave and call the police.

Been to Five Guy's once. They yell the orders and it is very loud in there. I would rather go to Gary's on Washington Rd or North Augusta. And the burgers are better also and they don't yell.
