- The school board held a special meeting Tuesday to discuss whether to renew the charter for Jenkins-White Elementary Charter School. The school is proposing to revise the charter it used in its first five years. The changes mostly concern curriculum structure and instruction. Though the structure of the school was not debated, the board took issue with its proposed governing body. In accordance with a federal mandate, Jenkins-White is proposing an 11-member governing board that would be chosen by school administrators. Board of Education members discussed the merit of this system, given that taxpayers would fund the school but not have a voice in the selection of the governing body. The board did not take action Tuesday but scheduled a special meeting for 5 p.m. May 25 to discuss the renewal. The board has until May 31 to submit the charter to the state for approval.

- The board also will discuss the furlough day calendar at the May 25 meeting.

- The board recognized three Richmond County students selected as 2011 Gates Millennium Scholars. Westside High School seniors Jasmine Dawson, Darrell Deas Jr. and Sheryle Dickens were chosen among 23,000 applicants for the scholarship, which pays for undergraduate and master's education.

- The board gave final approval to a school lunch price increase that will take effect next school year. Lunch prices will rise to $1.85 for elementary and middle schools and $2.15 for high schools.
