Rants & Raves

Comments from our readers:

WE ARE FED UP with thugs, drugs and booming cars. They must go!

THIS A RANT FOR the Columbia County government. What will it take before you install a traffic light at the intersection of Columbia Road and Old Belair Road? There are frequent accidents and long lines of traffic in all directions. I guess if this situation existed north of the Columbia County Mason-Dixon line (Washington Road), it would be addressed.

WHY DO REAL estate agents put "open house" signs in front of locked houses?

TO THE PERSON WHO says that law enforcement personnel get paid overtime, time-and-a-half: Not in Richmond County. They may get comp time. They have to go to court on their time. But if you take the number of hours worked in a year for a deputy, divide that into the yearly salary, you'll see how much they're getting paid. Believe me, they do not make that much money working in the sheriff's office. It's just a job. They want to do it. But they don't get paid the money that everybody thinks they do.

IF A MINOR COMMITS a crime, their name should be publicized, and their parents', also. This would eliminate some of the crime and would also make the parents responsible for better at-home upbringing.

THIS IS A RANT in response to the article about Gov. Nikki Haley's inaugural party. Boeing Co. gave her $25,000 for the event. She has said several times that she would do everything in her power to keep the union out of the Boeing Co. Now, if this is not buying a governor, or at least bribery, what is?

ABOUT THE LADY who bumped into her son: If he was like my son, he's a good size at 15 years old, and she probably has been threatened by him before. So I don't blame her. If he was disrespectful to me and the teacher, I'd bump him, too, to knock him off balance so I could get his cell phone. Don't judge until you've been there.

THIS IS A RANT FOR reproductive rights advocates. Women have very good reproductive control methods: Self-control and birth control. And abortion in the case of incest or rape. The taxpayers should not be forced to subsidize a failure of personal moral responsibility. You should reap what you sow.

THE RICHMOND COUNTY Sheriff's Office, they shoot first and ask questions later. I guess it cuts down on paperwork.

SCOTT DEAN KNEW people. That's how he got bond. That's why he's out on bond. But the young mother who ran over her son, she doesn't know anybody. She's going to sit in jail because she doesn't have connections. It's not what you know in this world, it's who you know. It's just not right, but that's how it is.

When a uniformed police

When a uniformed police officer is threatened with a weapon during an arrest or when one is pointing their firearm at you, ordering you to stop and you choose to continue to come at them, thank God they shoot first and live to go home that evening.

Amazing that every criminal that RCSO has been forced to shoot has had MULTIPLE felony arrests which resulted in arrest without incident so no one can claim that they didn't know what to do when confronted by police officers. They chose the life of crime, they chose to place officers in harm’s way, and they chose to have the officer follow his training and STOP the threat which ended their life instead of that of the officer.

An officer dies in America every 3 days so we should be very thankful that thus far in Richmond County the good guys are going home at night and the criminals who forced them to respond with deadly force aren't.

Unlike criminals, police officers and Deputy Sheriff's don't go to work on a daily basis expecting to have to use their firearm. Most if not all hope to never have to use their firearm and go through the extensive scrutiny from various agencies and the media as well as having to deal with what has just occurred. We ask our police to do their job, train them to do their job and then when they actually do it, so many question their decisions that had to be made in a split second in order for them to go home that evening.

As for this rant even being printed to begin with, it goes perfectly along with the ridiculous article earlier in the week.

As for the comment regarding the pay of deputies within the RCSO, it is absolutely pathetic. The commission should be ashamed. Our deputies have actually received pay cuts the past two years due to not receiving raises and their insurance deductions increasing. Combine that with 2 furlough days last year and 5 this year, it is no wonder that the majority of them must work second jobs or special duty assignments to just barely make ends meet....all this to then be unfairly scrutinized by untrained persons and media outlets when they do what they must do in order to do what we all want to do after work....go home.

Well said Asitisinaug! It is

Well said Asitisinaug! It is unfortunate that not only does society not appreciate the job we do in law enforcment, but they also scrutinize us when we work off duty jobs to support our families. The most consistant complainants I have seen out of people lately in the Augusta chonricle are comments like, "I don't get to work specials, so why should the police get to?" and "The police make more then I do; so why should they get a raise?" and lastlye "Why do the police get take home cars? I don't get a take-home car."

The answer to all of these questions is because you (the citizen) do not sacrifice as the police do. The police officer is on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! How many plumbers, lawyers, dentists, and walmart workers can relate to that?

Yes, they do get to work off-duty jobs because they need more money to support their families. Since there is no such thing as overtime at RCSO, there is no other choice.

Yes, all law enforcement deserve a raise because of the 24/7 hours and the fact that they are all prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice. They are all sworn to an oath, and will lay down their very lives protecting the very citizens that are so critical of them. Can you (the citizens) honestly say that you are prepared to make the same commitment and sacrifice?

Yes, they do get take home cars for mulitple reasons, but here are a couple of key reasons: First, when you park a police car in a neighborhood or an apartment complex, you make people feel safer. Second, since a police officer is on duty 24/7, you never know when they may be madated to respond at a moments notice. With that, do you really want a police officer responding in his personally owned vehicle, and then subsequently changing into his patrol vehicle? This presents the problem of the liability of insurance because the officers insurance company will not cover the claim, and the fact the officer would not be able to respond as quickly.

I hope the citizens of Augusta will stop brutalizing their law enforcement and begin to understand how to nuture and support them.

Scott Dean is white and the lady who bumped her son with vehicle is black. The judicial system knew people too by race.Whites are ten time more likely to avoid prison time than black.Prosecutor,Ashely Wright and others prosecutors, refused to negotiate any kind of plea deal with blacks, who comitt crimes, but on the other hand they negotiated plea deal with whites, who comitt crimes, especially Columbia County.

Scott Dean is established in this area and is a low flight risk. He has not been convicted of anything and has no reason to flee to avoid prosecution. These are just a few of the factors that are considered in situations like this. The race card is worn out.

Oh, I have a feeling that if there are booming cars in the parking lot, Joe Bowles will fix that pretty quick. That's just a hunch, though.

It takes about 1-2 years for Augusta to catch up with the latest "in" thing, so maybe it'll get better.

A man who hit and killed a bicyclist by accident, in October, GOT bond, the mother, (who, in my opionion) was trying to show her child she meant business and was not trying to do anymore than to scare her child into doing what she told him, is still in jail without bond? No race card, but it is strange these two cases are about vehicles and harm that is done from them, yet, the woman, who happens to be black, is in jail, who the man, (who was reported to speed up before the impact, just like the mother, as claimed) who is white, is out on bond, yet her plight, from the state point of view is so much more different than the white male's. No, it may not be about race, but the fairness of the whole situation, just doesn't add up.

The police force needs better

The police force needs better training when it comes to deadly situations.. Alot of cops in larger cities would have shot the criminals in the leg, arm, thigh, etc...

Alot of new investments and businesses have been annouced this week..

A large mix-use development(Dyess Park) will be built along Jimmie Dyess park in SWAG aka Southwest Augusta. The Jimmie Dyess Pkwy/Gordon Hwy Corridor is really starting to take off. There's a 25 acre commercial shopping center and a 200 acre subdivision already coming to the same area. Not to mention they're still building alot of new houses in the area.

http://www.loopnet.com/Listing/16945338/4003-Harper-Franklin-Avenue-Augu...

A 6,000 sq. ft. 250 seat Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant will occupy 1.5 acres at the Augusta Exchange... The strip of land seems to be located behind the old BP gas station between Robert C Daniel Jr Pkwy and Skinner Mill road..
http://appweb.augustaga.gov/planning_zoning/plazid_display.asp?zID=4162

Tutti Frutti frozen yogurt is getting ready to open in the shopping center across the from Regal 20 cinemas. The business is located next to the Limelite Cafe... If you click on the store locations and go to Georgia.. The words ''coming soon'' are next to Augusta along with a location in Alpharetta....

Punjab Grill is opening a Evans location in the former the Serendipity Coffee Shop and the old Shaved Ice Shop in Eagle Point Shopping Center. The business is located next to Ace Hardware on Washington Road.....

I have two more updates to

I have two more updates to share with the public...

Groceries & More is opening in the White's condo building on Broad street in the Artist Row area. The business is located next to Casa Blanca Cafe and they're applying for a alochol license... I suspect this has to do with Lennar Corp annoucing their plans to finish the 34 remaining condos in the building...

York Ventures is building a 2 story 32k sq. ft. medical office building in the Medical District.. The building will be located at the intersection of the new Saint Sebastian Way bridge and Walton Way.... The building is right by the recently renovated $5 million Sutherland Mill(medical condos).. A few months ago Augusta Ent purchased the entire second floor (more than 14k sq. ft.) at the Sutherland Mill.
http://www.augustaga.gov/archives/43/AGENDA,%20BZA.%20NOV.%2010.pdf

On a side note... I'm wondering what's coming to the building next to Davids Mens Wear and the Whites building.. I saw workers renovating the exterior and the interior of the building today...

AMEN to the Columbia Road and

AMEN to the Columbia Road and Old Belair road ranter. And the worst part of that very bad situation is being on Old Belair crossing Columbia heading north. You can't just cross Columbia- that wouldn't be nearly dangerous enough - the two parts of Old Belar don't meet. The two parts are about 50 feet apart. You have to get on Columbia heading west for about two seconds, then hang a quick right. But mind the HUGE crater in the road as you are missing getting sideswiped by inches.
It was bad when I moved to my subdivision in 2004 - now several more subdivisions have sprouted near this intersection (with of course X amount more cars) and it's a nightmare. I would be very, very surprised indeed if anything ever gets done about it. Our houses sell in the low 100K range. Nothing but military and law enforcement mainly - nobody important enough to get too hopped up about.

Ok, Countyman; lets see you take a chance on a thug that has already leveled his gun in your face. As you direct your aim will his hollowpoint tear through you first? Will hitting him in the leg or arm stop his finger from squeezing that trigger??? Do you feel lucky??? Remember you're rolling the dice on eternity, friend...

Countyman, I married into a cop family and I am friends with many cops. I can assure you that they do NOT aim for an arm or leg. IF they are in a situation where they need to draw their weapon, they are NOT going to just try to harm the perp...hit him in the leg and he (I use that term generically) might still hang onto that gun and pull that trigger. I know of no place that ever advises shooting to harm vs shoot to kill.

Some people hate "Booming"

Some people hate "Booming" cars and some people hate "slingshots". The police DO NOT shoot to kill, They shoot to STOP. Unfortunately the area that provides for the best STOP frequently results in an untimely and ALWAYS tragic death { wink, wink } Now if a large amount of shootings included a bullet hole behind an ear there might be some reason for some questions. And the best birth control device for men is already out there, It is called child support. As for the lady who allegedly bumped her youngun with the SUV, If I were her, when I got out, I would buy a BUS.
